Its a good plan.  The players' salaries are way too high to begin with.

  • 180 million how laughable, the owners are really pathetic. When the strike comes its going to be framed in a way to blame the players but the owners are real turds and responsible for 99% of it.

Fuck MLB owners. All 30.

The CBA already calls for teams to spend the revenue sharing threshold, which was $91M in 2019.

The current CBA doesn't mandate anything. A salary floor actually would. A luxury tax to redistribute the vast difference teams like the Dodgers make compared to someone like the Rays is absolutely needed. The NBA has one and the NFL has full revenue sharing.

$180 million won't be accepted though, probably need to be closer to $225M

The CBA states otherwise.

Quote

Revenue-sharing dollars — which will be phased out for the A’s under the current Basic Agreement — are required to be spent for improving the MLB performance of recipient clubs. That doesn’t necessarily mean it all must go to player salaries, but though teams are required to report on how they use the money. And as JJ Cooper of Baseball America notes on Twitter, successive collective bargaining agreements have tightened the permissible uses.

Why is this coming out now. Wait until the end of the world series.

The 180 is just when the first penalty is. Its not a hard cap.

I love the proposal. A salary floor us what the league needs to stop the tanking and making the league more competitive.

100 would put the Royals Guard and Bucs outta bizness.

The question should be what are they trying to screw the players out of.

Can you possibly get more cynical?

No way the players agree to a 180 mil ceiling, that's way too low. I bet they love the 100 mil floor. So many mediocre players are gonna get unreasonable contracts.

" The new initial tier would be $180 million, and tax rates would begin at 25 percent. The current system has the initial tier at $210 million with tax rates starting at 20 percent. "

Yeah no, that ain't going to be agreed upon. Owners want a lower initial tier, with HIGHER tax on it? Yeah, ok. MLBPA will laugh pretty easily, at that.

Players salaries are not too high right now... however, if the owners get what they want and stop the increase in salary then they better lower ticket costs for the fans, otherwise I'd rather see the owners money going to the players. If they just pocket the extra revenue then that's wrong.

Based on what? MLB players get a smaller percentage of total revenues than the other major sports. Less money for the players just puts more money in the pockets of billionaires, it isn't going to trickle down to you or me.

It's a good starting point for negotiation as the salary floor is really enticing.

It will keep teams from totally ranking, make the league more competitive and bring the lower salaries up.

I just question how much money the poor teams make and if they can absorb a salary floor.  I have absolutely no clue.

But if the owners as a group are proposing this, does that mean all 30 are cool with the floor?

Part of it will be offset by the lower ceiling as it will create more revenue for the lower salary teams.

I wonder if this will be the end of the rebuild era?

Something definitely needs to be done though. The White Sox are the only team in their division not tanking...

THe luxury tax has basically been acting as a hard cap; almost no one wants to be over the tax threshold for multiple years as the tax scales. 98% of the teams won't go over it.

The old argument is that MLB has higher development costs, compared to NFL and NBA.  Just sayin....
