Offseason Part 2 - Lets the Rumors & Action Begin

Our 4th starter might be our best starter. His name is Kopech. Not sure why you keep referring to Keuchel as anything but the 5th SP.

In reality our rotation should be broken down as

1: Giotlito

2: Lance Lynn

3: Michael Kopech

4: Dylan Cease

5/6: ReyLo/Keuchel

Whoever starts and whoever is the 6th man will be determined in ST.  If we somehow get another starter then it drops Keuchel off imo.

  • He’s still great on tv.  He’s absolutely brutal on Twitter.  He’s a yes man and he’s a condescending jackass on social media.

  • At least they didn't get roped along all off-season only to get Manny Machado's friends and relatives. It could be a lot worse.

  • So I just got a text from a buddy of mine who is very connected (to MLB not necessarily Sox). Said Sox are on fire right now and close on a couple sizeable moves.

But Keuchel makes $18M in the last year of his deal, so we’re not allowed to do anything but use him as our #4 starter next year despite rapidly declining stuff and horrible results last season. Let’s hope Hahn doesn’t accept mediocrity simply because he has a bad contract on his hands.

You haven't been following the Sox long enough.

This exactly how it works.

I'd be willing to bet out a Steak Dinner and Gibson's that outside of a miracle trade or injury, Keuchel will be in that starting rotation to start the season.

Again, I don't want that.  But I'm also realistic.

Because Kopech is going to cap out at 140 innings or so.  Who do you expect to start game #4 in a playoff series?

Right? Zzzzz.

Yeah maybe the calm before the storm?

Don’t come telling me “no one could have seen this coming” when two of those starters are down at the same time if nothing is added.

I think his offensive ceiling is very high and he's an ideal fit for this lineup. But ultimately you can only have so many 1B/DH/corner OF types on one roster.

Yea I was thinking the same thing. I like Sheets, but if he can get marginal value at a need spot he's expendable. That said, I like him a lot. I think he can have some 3 WAR seasons as a DH type. He has a nice lefty stroke (and eye) and the shift ban is going to help him.

I’m hoping, but we can’t bank on Kopech being able to be a starter come October, so by default it’s Keuchel at the moment.

But we can.  The team already said he is ready for a jump bc its not about innings but the intensity, magnitude, and stress put on the arm.  I assume we can expect easily 150 IP if he stays healthy and they manage him properly (Sox have problems with that so who knows).  Imo by October he will be our ACE but due to inexperience we will slot him 3rd.

Kopech. They’ll rest him throughout the year.

Everyone has that problem.  Only Miami and MIL have pitchers beyond say 6 strong

I'd be shocked if he goes 140. Shit, regular guys healthy and vet don't even expect much more than 160 now. OU is somewhere around 115 imo. Maybe even 110.

OK but what's your plan then, go get two starters and store them in a refrigerator?

You only have a 25 man roster to use here, you can't have a 7 man rotation.

Ideally, Kuechel would take the Adam LaRoche route and problem solved.

I think Chicago is perhaps in a position to not have that problem if they make a smart move or too though. Unique position. Hopefully they wait out Carlos and he comes back on a good deal because he likes it here. Him with another addition would be awesome. We could rest guys all the time.

I’ll take the over. If it’s the under he got hurt. Kid gloves come off. We’ve already burned his most valuable seasons, unfortunately. It’s time. I’m fine with some maintenance time here and there during summer, but 110 innings is a joke if he’s healthy.

Yes, this is not the place to talk that global warming shit.  ?

Just wanted to say how nice it is that we’re all talking about baseball again as opposed to lockout bullshit.

I'm with ya, my expectations however are with what PTAC is saying. Just how it's done now.

Yep. It still sucks in a mentally drained kind of way. But the excitement of the everyday is coming back.

You guys have significantly more faith in Tony than I do.  All it takes is one injury in the rotation and easing Kopech in will be near impossible, especially with less off days and more double headers.  I’d rather not gamble my post season chances on that.

That’s not what I was getting at. Their just needs to be one move that opens the floodgates.

26 man roster and you can stash two long relievers in there, even if one is significantly overpaid.

Sale went from 71 innings to 192 in one season.

You’re 100% right here, there’s what 4 scheduled double headers now? That did make pitching depth doubly important.

I can’t believe people are actually ok with this guy as our #4 starter next year:

I sure as hell am not.  He was toast last year and I don't see much changing if he is still in the rotation.
