As was said earlier, there is correlation between extreme performance in the spring and regular season performance. Moncada's spring has been extreme....and not in a good way.

correlation =/= causation.

it could be some guys who perform really poorly in spring are hurt, but the guys that aren't hurt have no barring. jack, watching spring training and caring about results is just a terrible thing to do given how many years you've been following this closely.

I’m sorry but this is peak degenerate gambler.

  • You just said you won’t complain about Moncada if he puts up 4-5 war seasons. He put up a 4.5 war season in 21, yet you complain about him nearly daily. This does not compute, Jack.

  • Eloy playing at the warning track for a lefty hitter is going to get very tiring.  That’s the most routine fly ball ever that dropped because the DH is in the field.

I don't expect Moncada to win an MVP with how he's trending...it's simply that expectations were so high when he signed with Boston and rise to the #1 prospect in the sport.  Devers was a bit under the radar, comparatively.

That said, it took another #1 in Buxton years and years to get his swing and health to this point.

and Devers and Moncada value on a rate basis was nearly identical last year...

This is more than just a bad spring.

lol know it's not. that's literally exactly what it is, "a bad spring."

Like I said, Jack is in mid-season form.

I still am dumbfounded how anyone who has followed baseball for more than a week draws any conclusions from spring training.

Kevin Newman hit 606 last spring with a 1429 OPS in 33 at bats.

Kevin Newman had a .574 OPS in 517 at bats in the regular season for the Pirates last year.

Extreme outliers tend to stick. That's the point I'm making.

You didn’t hear? We missed the Spring Training playoffs. We stink!

Jack, at times you're the king of someone who completely misuses almost any statistic they find.

You are not making any point tho, it’s just the same tired sky is falling bs.

This is more than just a bad spring.

The only thing that means anything here is 38 PAs. It’s barely a bad weeks worth of at bats.

Moncada doesn’t care about spring training though and isn’t putting forth full effort

You can use the same excuse for Sousa and Henzman.  No excuse for Moncada to look this bad.

no you can’t, they are fighting for a job, moncada obviously isn’t.

Like watching your kid shit his pants during the school play.

Something called Xavier Fernandez just hit a bomb

I'm the one who said that, but I think his 3 year track record of being very good and still being in his prime carries a lot more weight than 30 ST PA's or whatever.

He is very good, and still has that defense. I don’t ever see MVP for him as some might have hoped though. It goes to show ceilings are as much about if as they are about when.

Of course there is…these games don’t matter

I’d be pretty content if Moncada more or less stays at this level for the remainder of his time here

(I of course mean 4-5 win player)

If Moncada puts up 4-5 fWAR for the next 3 years nobody is complaining.

I've heard a fair number of poeple complaining while he did that last year right?

lmao right

that and people complaining about him being a pussy or whatever when he’s never played less than 80% of the teams games since coming up. I do not get it.

And I defended him.

This is the thing: he was the centerpiece of the Sale trade and the #1 prospect in baseball at one time. People expected superstar and they got very good.

When Superstar is the expectation, very good is disappointing to some.
