Do you basically have to start from scratch after TJS? For example, if he had built up innings as a starter in the past, would it be easier for him to ramp up the innings post surgery than if he was a reliever with lower innings per year?

Not from scratch but he hadn't pitched many innings in a season to begin with. The most he has ever pitched in a season was about 65 and that was 3 years ago. His build up will be slow regardless if it is on the minors or MLB.

The odds are just about as improbable as Chet Holmgren being the best in the NBA since Larry Bird…that said, the premium on left-handed relievers throwing 95+ isn’t nearly what it used to be. Those pitchers were like unicorns before. Now they’re pretyy commonplace.

June 21, 20223 yr If he wants to build innings starting games in the minors, go for it. But spot starting in the Bigs between pen outings really isn’t going to build up the required innings. Not to mention how poorly TLR would manage that.
June 21, 20223 yr No reason he can't be a twice through the lineup guy. Or at least enter to face a lefty heavy portion of the lineup and stay to see them twice. Feel like that is the future of the game anyways, barring any rule changes.
June 21, 20223 yr His injuries and lack of starts were true when he was in college, yet the Sox drafted him anyway, which suggests that the Sox believe he can be a starter. I'm assuming that the FO wasn't so short-term minded to draft a reliever with pick #11.

The obvious difference is Sale had a non-competitive 2011 season to get ready… White Sox don’t have that luxury with their current all-in posture and Bummer having something of a down season compared to years past.

Lol that 2011 season was supposed to be competitive. They had just added Rios and spent big on Dunn to try to solve some of their problems from 2010. And even with that, as soon as something iffy happened while trying to stretch him out in 2012, they tried to stick him in the bullpen, and the one who said no is Chris Sale. If he'd gone along with Kenny and the management, they'd have made him a permanent closer in 2012 and he'd never have left that role.
