Jesse Rogers: Sox Sign Benintendi - 5yr / $75M

FWIW, while Benintendi was not great playing in Yankee stadium, his peripheral statcast numbers looked pretty good. He had an expected slash line of .253/.387/.449 while his actual slash line was .212/.354/.365 (this is actually an above average wRC+). His BABIP in that small sample was .212 so it's safe to say that when it normalizes over a larger sample, you're looking at numbers much closer to the expected slash line.

Savage numbers incoming.

No his 2nd one

lol come on man, Eaton was 32 when we signed him the 2nd time around. Benintendi will be that age when this contract is over.

I like the move.  They actually spent money on a good player who filled a HUGE need.

I'd be careful with that. AJ Pollock was "good" too, before he got to Chicago

Lowe would be a perfect fit to round out the lineup. Doubt it happens, but like seeing him suggested.

If they somehow acquired Lowe with prospects - I'd be pretty happy (quite honestly).

I have too much PTSD. The Sox signed him so he's about to have the worst season of his career.

If you do not like this move you just want to be miserable and there is nothing that can be done.  Stay miserable I don't care but it's a good signing and what they need.

f*** it I will research to prove you wrong

Eaton 1.0 24 age season OPS 86

Eaton 2.0 32 age season OPS 66

Eaton 3.0 27 age season OPS 120

carry on with your nonsense though and be a miserable Sox fan it that's what gives you your kicks.  The eaton singings have nothing on this one but piss and moan and yell at the clouds while you are at it.

I'm fine with either player, but their career OPS+ is separated by 1 point. For as drastically different as their skillsets are, they have essentially been the same calber of hitter during their career. Some people just get overly fixated on low batting averages & lots of strikeouts.

I don't get overly fixated - I just fundmentally don't believe the 2 are equal.  I just don't.  No one will convince me otherwise but I understand people that will hang up and point to the one stat and say see - they are the same. I go back to - good hitters will deliver more often against good pitching than bad 3 outcome players do against good pitching.

Not to mention - tight playoff games, etc - when you need a run, I want the guy up there who can swing and hit for a better average than the 3 outcome guy.  That isn't to say I want Juan Pierre over someone who hits .250 with 35HR and a .340 OBP though.  That is ludicrious.

But someone who is basically a sub .200 hitter.  Him getting a hit is basically dumb luck at that point. Yes - it might go far, but those guys just aren't valuable players and are complete black holes for significant stretches.

I feel your pain. The Chris Sale curse has got to be losing some juice by now though. The HOF person is gone. Maybe the sun is gonna come out, TOMORROW!

Any move the Sox make is bad, because the Sox only make bad moves.

Like I said too much PTSD. Everyone sucks.

Harold Jimmy and a few others noted they were very in on Murphy.

I bet Hendriks to TOR for Jansen (in some form or another) is the next move. Balances out payroll and addresses C for the next two years.

Foodies are also implying a BP trade is coming soon.

At that point just add a 4th OF and low salary LH platoon 2B and they're prolly good to go I bet unless they get something huge for TA.

Here's another stupid comparison.  Pollock has a history of being injured and was old.  Then there is the whole NL career thing...oh and he is right handed which the Sox don't need but these accounts there is nobody to sign after Harper and Judge.

He’s going to be so confused when he’s getting Rocco chants at the Rate.

As soon as I hear the "Let's go Rocco" chant, I will search you out and buy you a beer my friend.

Its only stupid until it isn't ?

Keep it to yourself then, man.

Give credit where credit is due... Kaplan called this before anybody.

Jack you have to enjoy *something* when they at least try to significantly address issues and spend legit money otherwise what's the point dude unless this is just a shtick to get a reaction out of people like Ron.

Yeah there’s definitely a few trades coming.  Was obvious from what Hahn was saying.  I still can’t believe Benintendi is only getting a little more than double this year than the great Trevor May.

He was smokescreening like I thought. They were pushing Gallo too hard which made no sense if he was the real target since the FO likes to operate in secret.

Sign a AAAA pitcher, AAAA outfielder that can defender an MLB 4th OF (Engel) give Mendick a minor league deal and roll with it.

Find 2B internally

This is not a bad signing at all, defense will be better also.

It's half schtick and half legit PTSD.

When was the last time the Sox signed someone that didn't completely suck or get injured at some point during their contract?

Grandal was great for his first 2 seasons, but fell off a cliff in his 3rd.

Murphy's law rules the White Sox.

I could see them trying to get Biggio along with Jansen.

I’m not even that big of a Gleyber Torres guy but I would rather trade Liam for him than Danny Jansen.

Gallo would have been ok but this move addresses their real needs.
