Forgot from who thought. As far as other free agents, who else? Profar?
February 18, 20233 yr Seems pretty obvious he is getting the first crack. Sure doesn’t look like they will add anyone either. If Romy flops Sosa is probably next in line.

February 18, 20233 yr Romy has shown nothing to think he wouldn't be completely overwhelmed in an every day role. He was a disaster between AAA & MLB last year. Even his breakout season 2 years ago came with a 28% k rate in AA. As a depth piece Romy is fine, the tools are intriguing etc, but odds are we're looking at another season where 2b is a complete black hole.
February 18, 20233 yr Ideally both Romy and Sosa have great springs and they make it tough on everyone. Romy can play a bunch of positions, Sosa can play 2b/3b/ss. Having them both may be better than carrying Marisnick or Reyes or whoever.

He’s going to be sub-replacement or like a 2.5 win player next year. Definition of a boom or bust like guy and I wouldn’t bet on the latter given how much he is likely to strike out.

Romy wouldn’t be my first choice, but given that they refuse to address the hole, he seems like their go to.
February 18, 20233 yr He at least looks like he can hang. Sosa looked like a lost child wandered onto the field last year.

How could you not be intimidated when you know the manager is looking for any excuse to park you on the bench in favor for his beloved pet Leury.

February 18, 20233 yr Profar, but he almost exclusively played LF last year. Jose "Popeye" Rodriguez or Bryan Ramos...although more a 3B/1B type and at least another year away at any rate. SECOND BASEMEN Rougned Odor (29, 1.8) Jonathan Villar (32, 1.2) Edited February 18, 20233 yr by caulfield12

My initial comment was more in jest to Sosa's puzzling handling in the first place. However, I imagine a manager showing confidence in a player would help said player's confidence. I think it's quite the conclusion to reach after 36 major league PAs to say that he "can't handle any stress".

February 18, 20233 yr https://soxmachine.com/2023/02/white-sox-want-you-to-know-how-much-they-like-romy-gonzalez/ Working against González: Just about everything else in his pro career. González struck out 112 times in 93 games during his otherwise charmed season, and that flaw was exploited in his cups of coffee. He’s struck out 39 times against just two walks over 109 MLB plate appearances, including a worrisome whiff rate against fastballs, as Josh and I hashed out in a podcast episode about the second base situation back in December. Throw in everything that came before his breakout — the 18th-round selection, the .693 OPS at Kannapolis as a 22-year-old, being left out of alternate training site plans — and it’s hard to understand how Romy became their homie. At best, I can make an easy argument to not dismiss González. Injury and illness prevented him from attempting to build on his breakout, yet his 2022 season could’ve been even worse. He climbed out of his minor-league rut after a midseason tonsillectomy, and a team with contender-level depth probably would’ve allowed González to finish the year on a higher note in Triple-A, rather than calling him up for MLB plate appearances that became less and less competitive. Either way, credit to González for salvaging what could’ve easily been a total loss, and to the point where he apparently has the inside track to second base.
