New White Sox Stadium?

Featured Replies

There's an article on Twitter that states that  JR just spent $17 million dollars on land  near the United Center. Don't know if he wants a new baseball stadium there.

More parking…

Wealthy man buys land near land he owns.  News at 11.

The West Loop is hopping.  Could simply be a purchase to flip later.  It happens all the time.

Why? Is he anticipating big crowds?

The Bulls still draw well.  But there is already ample parking.

New White Sox Stadium? Because a POS billionaire spent $17M? Lmao

Parking >>> Sabes staff

Owning baseball teams is such a tough business. According to JR, it’s next to impossible to make money. Luckily, he was able to scrape up $17 million for this purchase.

Interesting. It won't be for a stadium though, the yuppification of the West Loop is extending out and this is for speculation purposes or to turn it into a planned development. He bought another lot near here too last year. Probably more. Note that this is happening near the UC and not near Comiskey. There is very little real estate development value around the ballpark which suggests that there won't ever be a new Sox ballpark. The team is gone when the next ownership group decides the stadium is done.

I appreciate your opinion and I know several people here think the new owner will move. However the next owner would be crazy to leave the third largest market and go to some small market. It wouldn't be wise to take a chance with his new fanbase that might not support the Sox for example like in Tampa Bay.

All the new owner needs to do is build a consistent winning playoff team that is exciting to watch, along with eventually a brand new state of the art stadium and the fans will support the Sox with great attendance.

Lol the Sox would never leave chicago

That's what they said in Brooklyn.

Billion dollar TV deals didn't exist in the 50s so not sure about that comparison.

Leaving for LA same as Nashville.

@Texsox has relocated, but that does not mean many MLB teams have in recent history.

Bud Selig and owner co-conspirators destruction of the Montreal Expos plus shady Loria and Nationals creation is the lone franchise move over the past half century. There are many threats, primary to shake down corrupt politicians and gullible fans / voters.

(I) Turn of 20th Century American League Relocation

  • Milwaukee Brewers (1901) - Saint Louis Browns (1902-1953)
  • Baltimore Orioles (1901-1902) - New York Yankees (1903-Current)

(II) Relocation Era - Followed American Southern and Western Migration / Break up of Smaller Dual Team Cities

  • NL Boston (1876-1952) - Milwaukee (1953-1965) - Atlanta (1966-Current)
  • AL Saint Louis Browns (1902-1953) - Baltimore Orioles (1954-Current)
  • AL Philadelphia Athletics (1901-1954) - Kansas City Athletics (1955-1967) - Oakland Athletics (1968-Current)
  • NL New York Giants (1883-1957) - San Francisco Giants (1958-Current)
  • NL Brooklyn Dodgers (1884-1957) - Los Angeles Dodgers (1958-Current)
  • AL Washington Senators (1901-1960) - Minnesota Twins (1961-Current)
  • AL Seattle Pilots (1969) - Milwaukee Brewers (1970-Current)
  • AL Washington Senators (1961-1971) - Texas Rangers (1972-Current)

(III) Modern Era

  • NL Montreal Expos (1969-2004) - Washington Nationals (2005-Current)

Baseball Contraction

  • (I) National League 1899
    • Louisville Colonels (1882-1899)
    • Baltimore Orioles (1882-1899)
    • Cleveland Spiders (1887-1899)
    • Washington Senators (1891-1899)
  • (II) Federal League (1914-1915)
    • Indianapolis Hoosiers (1914) - Newark Peppers (1915)
    • Kansas City Packers (1914-1915)
    • Chicago Whalers (1914-1915)
    • Baltimore Terrapins (1914-1915)
    • Saint Louis Terriers (1914-1915)
    • Brooklyn Tip-Tops (1914-1915)
    • Pittsburgh Rebels (1914-1915)
    • Buffalo Blues (1914-1915)

True.

So is it the loyal fan base or national media attention they have in Chicago that will keep them here?

No owner would leave the 4 million population Seattle metro area for a tiny 1.5 million metro area like Oklahoma City.

Major market potential given the right circumstances in the org. Not yet seen.

There are zero current domestic markets better than having the second team in Chicago. Oakland would be the best market available if they were open (the Giants will block any new team, they also blocked a viable A's stadium option).

A few teams moving to Nashville would make sense, perhaps Charlotte or Montreal, and that's pretty much it. The Las Vegas market is weak, they will not draw in the same way their first team (Golden Knights) or NFL Raiders draw, their TV revenue will be very low,

I still think there is a decent chance something in Oakland is worked out, and MLB uses the Nevada handout for an expansion team. What passed in the legislature last month (small Tropicana site) was a much smaller footprint than their original plan (Wild Wild West land with massive real estate development), though obviously that could also change over time.

A new owner would look at what the current ownership was able to accomplish with their investment fielding a shitty fourth place team year after year and do the same.

Sox fans are so easy to convince it will get better. It never does, but we'll argue forever it will.

That is a good point. However because of my work, I know a few people in Seattle that were basketball fans and upset at the time. The fact of the matter is, the Supersonics attendance was one of the worst in the NBA at the time and although it was a shitty thing to do to the Seattle fans when the owner moved the team to Oklahoma City, might have backfired on him. The current Thunder team is near the bottom of attendance in the NBA.
