It was nice to see Jake Burger stop by the CHGO White Sox podcast as a surprise drop in guest at the broadcast from the meetings today !

He was all class.

Finally, the signing we've all been waiting for:

  • A well-seasoned Rick Hahn was relieved of Semien, Bassitt and Tatis Jr. Experience doesn't play into it.

  • Sleepy Harold

It's a good thing Jim Bowden isn't the GM of the White Sox because his last two Cease trade proposals absolutely sucked s%*#.

It’s funny to me that CHGO has a booth.

Erick Fedde is closing in on a 2-year deal with Mystery Team! Is that good enough for ya?

no lmao

Now are you excited about Erick Fedde?!?!?!

I have no expectations about this offseason. 2024 is another 100-loss season.

That is a definite possibility

Boring winter meetings all around the game so far.

There needs to more alcohol involved at the winter meetings.

Maybe the owner's meetings had so many exploding, in-pants diarrhea incidents that everybody's too embarrassed to speak face to face.

I was just going to post the same thing.

Foul Territory podcast brought up the question: does the MLB need a winter trade deadline?

Thoughts?

The White Sox won’t call it a rebuild, but there’s no getting around the truth.

They are rebuilding. Retooling, reshaping, reconfiguring, re-anything is preferred to rebuilding, which spells not trying to contend, even in a weak division.

New general manager Chris Getz and his boss, chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, are looking at a minimum of two years before they can begin to expect to compete, even in the soft American League Central.

I would absolutely support an NFL and NBA-like signing period start date. Shut everything down in November, focus on the awards, maybe set some rules for what kinds of things can be discussed, and then allow signings to start either last week or this week - see if the competitive teams suddenly are jumping over themselves to get things done right at the start and that creates pressure like you see in the other sports.

A deadline at the end definitely works, we saw that in 2021 as well, but it seems harder to implement if a guy is somehow just out of luck if he's not signed by a certain date.

Rule 5 draft is today.  There are some interesting arms available.

CJ Van Eyk's ceiling is likely a Jimmy Lambert type long reliever/spot starter role but he has a good chance to stick on the roster all season.

Cole Wilcox and Matt Sauer will be a little riskier but they have middle of the rotation starter potential.  They both really  need a run of good health.

Justin Slaten could be a high leverage back of the bullpen reliever.

An FA signing window might be interesting. From the World Series ending to the GM meetings, teams can only talk to their own FA. GM meetings to  Winter Meetings team can negotiate w/ any FA or discuss trades not sign/trade yet. Winter Meetings until mid-Jan is the signing period. After Jan 15 teams can still sign MiLB deals or Spring Training invites or something along those lines.

I really enjoy CHGO coverage of the Sox particularly Vinnie Duber. He measures everything he says about the Sox making sure he isn't overly critical so as to not jeopardize his media credentials or journalistic neutrality but he is fair in his assessments .

CHGO also does a fine job covering all the other major Chicago sports teams too.

Pedro and possibly Getz have written him off. They may be correct, but I rather give Colas a second chance than sign Merrifield, Duvall, McCutchen or some other fossil for a starting role, or keep trotting Sheets' ass out there which is the Sox current depth chart RFer. Would be fine with a defense only 5th OF who can cover all three positions well but cant hit. The Sox don't have a legitimate backup to Robert.

I wouldn't say they have written him off but they are emphasizing that despite constantly being told or coached to make better decisions he continues to make the same mistakes.

They want to see progress in his approach to fundamentals and dedication to thinking the game and put his talent to better use.

He's not getting any younger and they are emphasizing to him in no uncertain terms that he needs to take what he is told seriously.

They wanted him to play winter ball but looks like he is a brand new father so he chose to be there for the beginning of his new son's life instead.

And basically have said he’s not starting in the majors on Opening Day

Yes that is the emphasis in no uncertain terms that   I mentioned. Better start earning your place,  be better than you have been. You have a lot to learn and a lot to lose.
