Looking beyond what we know already about the ineptitude of the White Sox and how bad the last three years have been, the thing with this hire...if these are true is that

  • He was the heir apparent to Bochy in Texas
  • Turned down the Mets last off season leaving Cohen out of the conversation, Sterns is guy you want to work for
  • Has worked with Theo - best baseball mind around and would assume a mentor
  • Resume that checks all major boxes

His connections and resume lead me to hope there was a plan laid out to him as to why this job is worth taking.  Sure it is all pie in the sky s%*# that I look at and hope I can be a fan again but unlike Grifol I don't have to squint really hard to like this hire.   Yes there are only 30 of these jobs but I think we can assume he was in a position like Ben Johnson with the Lions in that he can have his pick and he isn't risking it without a plan.

Is there a sale?

A move?

A new Stadium?

Why would he take this job?  The Bears job will be highly sought after, the White Sox, not so much.

Maybe I just want to fan again

It could be that this is just not a great off-season for managerial openings. Only 3 openings and the one that's actually good was taken by Francona. The other 2: Marlins and Sox are both bad franchises. Chicago's obviously the bigger market and Resindorf is cheap, but not quite Marlins-level cheap.

It does seem weird he turned down the Mets last year only to accept this job while he could have taken over the Texas job in a year or 2. There's gotta be something that was promised to lure him here. Because it's not like he didn't have alternatives.

It's a narrative crushing hire.  They didn't hire the LaRussa guy, the cheap guy or the ex-Royal guy.  They hired the best available young manager who has turned down other manager jobs which means Ch

  • ^This tells me it was a terrible move. The team is screwed.

  • I know it's your bit to take things to the extreme, but it just makes you look like a clown.  Will Venable may be a good hire. Maybe he won't. None of us really know. I agree it's a positive that

The Reds is a good opening?

Easier to take it out of my own ass than for you to take it out of Getz' ass.

It's a rebuild, and teams go through multiple seasons of losing 100+ games. Houston, Baltimore and the Cubs are teams that bit the bullet and tanked for multiple seasons to set up their winning windows. Teams like the Padres, and Baltimore (before their main, recent rebuild) languished for years below .500, trying to "win games", but never quite enough to get over .500.

A rebuild?

Are you brain dead? You know for the first 25ish years of my memorable life the Sox never went into a season trying to not win.

I complained occasionally about September collapses, the twins owning us, the Indians crushing our hopes late in the year, but i was always engaged.

An 82 win team is a thousand times more enjoyable than any rebuilding season. The fact that you think rebuilding again is OK is hilarious. Defending the White Sox spending at the bottom of the league for like 6 of the past 10 years...

The best part. You're so delusional that you compare the Sox "rebuild" to Houston. The White Sox aren't rebuilding. Calling this a rebuild is hilarious.

Trading any talent you do have continually for younger talent that's uncertain doesn't guarantee anything but a low payroll.

Yeah, this move looks good in a vacuum because it defies expectations.

But it's not like Getz made an actual roster move to inspire confidence, so we can hold our horses. Veneable may be the answer to the long running issue of the manager losing games, but Getz needs to assemble a non-horrific, shambling corpse of a roster.

Sox fans are happy they didn't shoot themselves in the foot.

Again.

Confidence is the wrong word, this stage is more of a fearful relief.

If Terry Francona took a job it became a good opening when he accepted it.

What has Ethan Katz done?

I am starting to wonder the same thing.  Crochet was a big win, but pretty much no one on the staff exceeded expectations.

This isn't the way baseball works anymore. Teams don't let their players get to FA. You can't just buy a team, and it hasn't been like that for a while. Every year people complain about the FA class for a reason.

Yeah, just look at the final four teams. Only the top 3 in salary made the Championship Series. Not all 4!

Take that you spending money noobs!

Chuck Tanner took over the 1971 team that was coming off a 106 loss season.  1972 the Sox were in 1st place as late as August 28th, a home from 4 years in the Navy. head of the A's who went on to win 3 straight WS.  1972 was my favorite baseball season outside of 2005. To this day I still find joy in that 2nd place team.

The White Sox will be contenders again, it is going to happen, and this could be the beginning of the process.

The summer of 1971 I returned home from 4 years in the Navy and experienced that sad baseball summer. Maybe there is hope after all. We'll see.

@Look at Ray Ray Run and @46DidIt

put each other on ignore.  I don’t want to have to ban anyone on this most blessed day and your back and forth is not fun to read.

thank you for your attention

Just to stress, the White Sox were 26th in fWAR from their pitching staff and 24th in fWAR from their starters last year. Their bullpen was historically bad even though people said "I think the bullpen might be ok" coming into the season. Multiple guys were dumped and got better when they went elsewhere. Pitching "Wasn't as bad as hitting" but no, it didn't "work". These guys shouldn't be graded on a curve.

Coming into the season, 26th/24th in FWAR felt about right.  But if the guy is untouchable,  shouldn't they have multiple guys exceeding expectations?  Like they had any awful pitching staff, so I didn't expect top 5, but outside of Crochet, no one else had a wow season.

You could do this without regularly chastising me for my writing style, and the name-calling.

We're in a rebuild. Houston and Baltimore endured multiple 100-loss seasons before their current competitive windows. A bunch of glum dudes softened up this selection for over a week by labeling everybody as a TLR hire, a JR hire, or God-forbid, somebody who ever wore a Royal uniform. The very people now shaking their heads at the low expectations LOWERED THOSE EXPECTATIONS THEMSELVES!!!

If you want civility, start acting civil.

I don't have an opinion on this hiring yet.

There. I said it. Decidedly undecided.

I hope that's not too controversial.

I know nothing about Will Venable as a manager, so this is absolutely a fair take and one I align with.

I think Getz hiring him works against him but I liked Bannister before Getz brought him on board so not everyone Chris hires is an idiot.

I found both my comments pretty funny.

A lot of good young talent.

"What quality, experienced manager would want this job? No one in possession of all his faculties. That’s how you end up with Grifol, and that’s how you end up with Venable. The hiring of La Russa was a warning to qualified managerial candidates: You’re dealing with a strange franchise here."

My take: Ultimately unless ownerships starts bringing in good players and revamping the minor league system it probably won't matter much...we'll see.

I tried to look up what day today is and all I found was......Wednesday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Did I miss a holiday that I should have taken off for?

Oops, sorry I found it.....St Venable's day, the newly announced patron saint of hopeless causes.

I'm glad to see a new manager hired in time to have input into the FA process.

What Free Agent process, JR's cutting payroll. He has a 25 million savings by not resigning Moncada, do you think JR is going to spend that 25 mil or keep it for his heirs?

I’m not sure claiming it’s easier to take something out of your own ass is the greatest position to lay claim to, either, if I’m being honest🤣

@kyle: Also my first reply there i made before I read your post, for the record

Before reading through this thread, I’d like to say a few things.

1) I was wrong.

2) White Sox, you really surprised me in a good way.

3) Will, sorry about your future in baseball.
