Braden Montgomery and Bonemer both on this week's hot sheet.

Quote

3. Braden Montgomery, OF, White Sox
Team: Low-A Kannapolis (Carolina)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .353/.500/.765 (6-for-17), 6 R, 1 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6 BB, 1 SO, 3-for-4 SB
The Scoop: Montgomery has had quite the ride to start his professional career. A fractured right ankle suffered on June 8 with Texas A&M prevented him from making his debut with the Red Sox, the team that picked him in the first round of last year’s draft. Later, he was one of four players traded for Garrett Crochet. After getting his feet wet with the White Sox this spring, Montgomery has gotten off to a strong start. The switch-hitting outfielder hits the ball hard, logging exit velocities of 110 mph or better, including a reading of 115 mph, while playing for the Aggies last year. Montgomery homered on Tuesday and then went deep again on Saturday while recorded a season-high 4 RBIs that night, too. (JC)

4. Caleb Bonemer, SS, White Sox
Team: Low-A Kannapolis (Carolina)
Age: 19
Why He’s Here: .471/.615/.765 (8-for-17), 5 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 5 RBIs, 7 BB, 4 SO, 3-for-5 SB
The Scoop: One of the top hitters on the summer showcase circuit in 2023, Bonemer has hit the ground running as a professional. Last week was the best week of his young professional career, as he reached base in more than half of his at-bats. On Wednesday, Bonemer collected four hits and reached base five times. He has thus far has shown advanced feel to hit and a discerning eye at the plate. Drafted in the second round last July, Bonemer is part of a core of good hitting prospects coming up in the White Sox system. (GP)

That is nice to see out of a HS getting an A ball assignment right out of ST.  It would be so incredible to get a true SS candidate into the system.

@Timmy U has watched more than I, but Bonemer just looks like he belongs. Unfazed and thriving with a slightly aggressive assignment is huge.

Obviously we are still in the SSS portion where a kid can quickly get figured out, but I would always rather see good lucky than bad lucky anyway.  Lord knows how much we need up the middle talent.

We're not allowed to have nice things.

Bonemer was very good in the summer/fall and was considered a top half of the 1st round guy going into the spring.  In one of my stupid early mocks I had him going to the Tigers at 1-11.  Then he went out and had a terrible spring and I'm not sure why.  Maybe he was playing thru something or maybe he made an adjustment and it didn't work. Whatever the reason he was bad but if he's the guy from the summer/fall and not the guy from the spring which is the direction he's trending  he's gonna be an absolute steal.

Bonemer did say that he kinda refused to adjust his mechanics downward to hit the 80 mph offerings of Lansing area teens wrapping up their baseball careers. Maybe that explains it. What has stood out to me is his consistency and maturity. He was the same dude last week as he was during his first week when he was getting robbed like every third at bat. He has a good understanding of the zone and he hits the ball hard. He is very promising.

I've been checking Bones and BMonty stats each game for a week or so. There's always

something good in each ones box score. A couple of those 2nd basemen from the Dodgers

trade are doing well also.

There's always going to be an intrinsic bias against Midwest kids as well...because they don't get nearly as much national exposure compared to the guys on the Coasts, SEC/ACC/Big12, Florida, CAL, Texas, etc.

Sure, there's a Jeter here and a Kelenic there, but it's still fairly rare.

I don’t think he’s a “true” SS. He can probably fake it for a couple years.

Omar Narvaez elected free agency after his DFA.  Noticed last night he played for Charlotte so he is evidently back with the Sox.  Should trades/injuries happen..........

Caleb Bonemer, SS, White Sox
It’s been a long time since the White Sox have drafted an impact hitter. So long that 31-year-old Tim Anderson might be the last homegrown Chicago draftee to meet expectations as a major leaguer. While it’s early in Bonemer’s career, the 2024 second-round pick offers White Sox fans a glimpse of hope that another could finally be on the way.

Hitting for power while showing average plate skills, Bonemer is currently putting together some of the best underlying data in Low-A. His exit velocity data is well above-average for his age and level, as evidenced by a 106 mph 95th percentile EV. Beyond the underlying data, Bonemer is putting together some good, old-fashioned production on the field, too. Entering Friday he is hitting .322/.447/.542 with nine extra-base hits and seven stolen bases. Bonemer has a well-rounded skillset with the ability to add strength and more power in the coming years. Could Bonemer be the White Sox great hope? Time will tell.

We're at the "TJ for position players" portion of the injury cycle...

Explains why they wouldn't let him throw and only DH.

Explains the timing as well. 10 months to spring training so he'll have no issues hitting full time and be ready to throw by the season.

Still kinda surprised he doesn’t dh for some period of time .  Could still have surgery and be ready for spring. And/Or dh next spring until ready. Hate losing the at bats.  I know you know recovery for position players is shorter. Maybe it did bother him batting?

Shortstop Colson Montgomery struck out twice and walked once for Triple-A Charlotte in their 13-12, 12-inning victory Sunday. Montgomery is batting .149/.223/.255 with a .478 OPS. Despite his struggles, Montgomery still is in the team’s long-term plans.

“He’s a player that if you continue to challenge him, you get the best version of Colson. He’s only getting better on the defensive side,” general manager Chris Getz said. “Everyone points to the size, the 6-foot-4 shortstops. But it’s been proven it can be done, and right now, it looks like Colson can play shortstop at the major-league level.”

Could be but having it done right now puts it at the good timing to be ready for next season. If they wait too much longer, he may not be ready.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- As a fellow Bledsoe Agency client training at their facility near Nashville, A's All-Star Brent Rooker had an early look at the tools that made Colson Montgomery a well-regarded hitting prospect.

"The size and athleticism is what stands out," Rooker said, recalling his first impression. "He's a really big kid. He moves well. Strong, loose, whippy, quick twitch. He's got all the physical things you're looking for in a prospect."

Elko on the BA Hot Sheet. As one would imagine.

Quote

6. Tim Elko, 1B, White Sox
Team: Triple-A Charlotte (International)
Age: 26
Why He’s Here: .333/.400/1.095 (7-for-21) 6 R, 1 2B, 5 HR, 8 RBIs, 3 BB, 6 SO
The Scoop: In the past 10 games, Elko has hit eight home runs, with three different two-home run games. No other MiLB hitter has eight home runs all season. Elko has always been a slugger, but he has shown increased power this year. He already has home runs of 114, 111 and 110 mph and has already collected more 110+ mph hits this year than he had in 48 games at Charlotte last year. (JJ)
