Jac Caglianone. After a 1-for-3 night, MLB's No. 19 prospect exited the contest with a .307/.392/.515 slash line in 26 games at Double-A this season. His fifth home run marked his 11th extra-base hit on the year, as the 6-foot-5 lefty has blown his numbers from his brief pro debut last year out of the water, boasting a 70-grade power tool, tied for the best among ranked prospects.

On Thursday, the Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell advised the Royals to stick to their timeline and give Caglianone all the development he needs (both offensively and defensively), even if Kansas City's lineup continues to flounder early in the regular season...

Quote

Braden Montgomery, OF, White Sox: Since his promotion to High-A a few weeks ago, Montgomery has hit .367/.457/.800. After hitting two home runs on Tuesday, Montgomery hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth with two on the following evening. The switch-hitting Montgomery has shown plus power in his short professional career with a 106.4 mph 90th percentile exit velocity and strong swing decisions to match. Montgomery has 30-homer upside if he continues to manage his whiffs, which have plagued him at times in the past.

You have to wonder how much Colson is in his own head.  There were times in competitive golf where I was in a funk and just had to put the clubs away for 10-14 days and start over.  Texsox probably understands.  Figure that is what the move to ACL was about but think he went to games to soon.

I was pretty surprised to see that he was playing in games. I had assumed he wouldn't see pitching faster than about 65mph coach tosses for at least a week and a half or so.

Hey Keith- Hagen Smith has 38 Ks in 23 innings, but also has been walking a lot of batters and struggling with control. It’s a small sample size, but overall is he pretty in line with where you’d expect him at this point, or are the early control issues concerning?

Keith Law

@Zach K. He's walked 18% of batters, which is in "you're a reliever" territory, and the only reason I'm not sounding that alarm is that he's faced only 99 batters all season. It's not good, though, especially combined with a delivery that's not easy to repeat and a little less velocity too.

Are your reports on Caleb Bonemer consistent with him potentially showing up on top 100 lists or am I just a desperate WS fan hoping this is true?

Keith Law

@Thomas R. He's cleaned up his swing. That was the whole thing last year ... his swing was a mess and it was different every few weeks. I think he's back to the guy he appeared to be in 2023.

Is there any reason why we can't find ACL team stats on MiLB.com or Baseball-Reference? MiLB shows the box scores, but doesn't link to any accumulated stats.

At points in the summer of 2023, Bonemer looked like a potential first-round pick in 2024. That didn’t come to fruition, however, as Bonemer dropped to the second round. The infielder didn’t debut following the draft, giving us our first look at him this spring.

That debut look as been excellent, as Bonemer is hitting .275/.404/.462 while showing power, getting on-base and limiting strikeouts. Under the hood, it looks even better, as Bonemer is displaying a nice blend of skills. His 14.2% in-zone miss rate is excellent, and he’s limited his exposure to whiffs outside the zone with a 22.6% chase rate, which is an above-average mark. Where Bonemer stands out is in his exit velocity data, with a 105.4 mph 90th percentile exit velocity in his professional debut.

Beyond his raw power, Bonemer has a knack for finding the barrel, with an average launch angle on his hard-hit batted ball events of 14.3 degrees. This has led to an outstanding barrel rate so far of 19.7%. This combination of skills gives Bonemer the look of one of the top breakouts names of 2025.

Braden #1 on this week's Hot Sheet.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/ranking-the-20-hottest-mlb-prospects-hot-sheet-5-12-25/

Quote

1. Braden Montgomery, OF, White Sox
Team: High-A Winston Salem (South Atlantic)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .476/.500/1.000 (10-for-21), 5 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 10 RBIs, 2 BB, 1 SO
The Scoop: Understandably, Montgomery wrecked shop in Low-A for the early portion of his professional debut before earning a bump up a level. If he keeps performing like he has so far, the Texas A&M alum might need to book a ticket back to Southeastern Conference country for his first test at the upper levels. One of the centerpieces of the trade that sent ace lefty Garrett Crochet to Boston, Montgomery has been overwhelming and unrelenting in the first month and change of his career. He smacked three home runs against Bowling Green last week, equaling the total he’d produced in 18 games with Low-A. He’s gotten on base in all but one of the 11 games he’s played with Winston-Salem since the promotion. (JN)
