Berroa, Carela getting TJ

This is why @southsider2k5 and others always say you need basically 2 or 3 times the prospects that you think you need.  Many will need surgery and many will bust.  Brutal.

That Santos trade went from looking good a year ago to pretty bad.

Including Larson and Bush, that's four.

Then Thorpe's situation is still a bit cloudy as well.

So we went and pretty much lost an entire rotations worth of pitchers in the last month.

In a way, I would rather have these guys have this surgery now before they are any good then when we are counting on them. Hopefully, they come back better than before, like the $6 million man.

Agreed. Still sucks obviously, but this season was always going to be a wash anyway.

Can never have enough pitching.

Yep. The way pitchers throw today it's not if they will have a UCL reconstruction it's when. It's a shame but that's the game today

This likely means Berroa is done with the Sox. He's out of options and he's likely not back until mid 2026 and he didn't exactly look ready for the bigs in his short stint. Seems like the most likely outcome on him is he gets DFAed next spring.

Fangraphs indicates Berroa has one more option which won't be used this year if he gets put on the 60-day IL. I would imagine they do that with either Berroa, Carella, or both to avoid playing the season with 38 active players on the 40-man.

I didn't realize you save a option year by using the 60 day DL.

Organization continues to lead the world in TJS every year

I'm pretty sure that on the 60-day IL, you stay on the pro squad, albeit, on the IL. He burns a year of service time, but they save the option.

No reason not to, it's two free roster spots.

So Carela was optioned today. Does that mean if they put him in the 60 day they won't burn his option?  I forgot that Berroa was technical on the active roster so they didn't have to option him they could just place him on the 60 day, keep him on the MLB roster and just eat a year of service time.

No, he's on the 40-man. If he's not on the 26-man, they're burning an option.

That’s, uh, not true at all.

I think Berroa is more valuable with an extra option than an extra year of service time.  I’d put him on the major league DL.

I wonder if they try to DFA Carela. Carrying him on the 40 man all year may be a bigger pain than he’s worth. I doubt too many teams want to claim him on waivers right now.

He’ll go on 60 day when they need a spot

speaking as a layman, why not put him on the 60 man immediately? is there some kind of chance for a PA grievance or something?

A team can only use the 60-day IL when they need to add a player. They can't just put a guy on the 60-day and be at 39 players.

Thank you.

To that end, why not put him on the 15 (I realize he would shift to the 60) and it is procedural, but what's the advantage of waiting?

There's no regular IL right now because there's no 26-man rosters in effect. And the 10-day (15-day?) doesn't open any spot on the 40-man.
