This seems like an over reaction. In fact, I think worrying about who the opening day starter any season is an over reaction.

  • Huh. Very cool for him. Even though I thought Davis Martin deserved it.

Stunning

Surprised it's not Dart, but congrats to Burke.

Seriously. Has nothing to do with the player himself, just embarrassing Sean Burke is the best an organization can throw out there Opening Day. If you didn’t announce the starter until the day of the game, 90% in attendance would say “Who?”

I thought it would be Davis Martin, but sure, throw the guy with stuff. I suppose the online people who were really concerned about Martin Perez being brought in to start opening day can calm down (not here, as much as Twitter).

Of the 4 members of the rotation, it's hard to for me to understand how it wasn't more deserved by any of the other 3. But I guess it doesn't matter

We are in a sad state but congrats to him he will never forget the moment.

I just hope the weather is nice, the stadium is packed, and, most important of all, that everyone has fun.

Second straight year we are going with the pitch data over all else. Martin Perez has the experience but nothing on the page.

I hope they actually win, the hell with all the rest. Besides it would probably be the only time in the entire season they are over .500.

Yup, this is very reminiscent of the Crochet call last year.

Would probably have given it to Davis Martin as an organizational persistence/perseverance/resilience award...but this is fine too.

Best pure stuff in the OD rotation.

Unless you include Shane Smith, who has also owned a spot all spring long based on his performance as well as radar gun readings.

I'm definitely on team Burke. He's got a shot.

Wonder if they"re considering a six man rotation??? or actually did promise B.Wilson starting spot/opportunity because no way Shane Smith isn't one of the five best guys this spring...that said, only 90 ip last season.

This is me. I am shocked (and concerned) by this call. It seemed Martin really, really deserved it. But I could have understood Perez or even Shane Smith; Cannon not so much.

Martin has been in the organization longer and has been untouchable in ST. I would really like to know the logic behind this decision.

I feel like Shane Smith is going to get the #5 spot.

Why would Smith make sense but not Burke?

That's just depressing.

Nice, I hope you have a blast. Ive been to a couple home openers, nothing quite like it. Friends of ours invited us to go with them to Detroit's home opener, which happens to be against the Sox. Hoping to come away with a southside W and a bunch of sad Tigers fans.

Good for him, that's awesome, these 'video reveals' are always touching. Wouldn't have been my pick though. I figured it was Cannon's job to lose -- and it seems like he did lose it -- but then my second choice would've been the veteran Perez who has produced some nice numbers this spring and is, well, a veteran. Third choice was Martin, pretty neck and neck with Martín, but he's barely pitched this spring, is he injured?

Anyway, I think going into the season that none of these guys particularly shines above the other, so maybe it's cause for optimism that Burke comes out of no where to get the role. Maybe he didn't come out of no where, he was awesome last year in the short time be was with the MLB club.

10 months ago it looked like he'd never make the bigs. Pitching for a rotten team does have its perks.:)
