The Lenyn Sosa Thread

Didn't the last two guys we signed out of cuba completely bust? Didn't even make MLB for a cup of coffee. Sosa even if he never plays another game for us at least became about an average regular for 3/4 of a season.

Yeah, I was trying not to measure the guys we signed out of Cuba at say 18 years or older, because it puts them on a different scale than the 16 year olds out of Latin America, but yeah.  I think the next most successful guy would be Bryan Ramos, who has tasted the majors, but it still TBD.

It’s absolutely wild how our perception of Colson has changed in just a little over a month. You and I, and probably everyone else, did not envision Colson being a major part of the future core. Now he’s been one of the best players in the game since the all-star break.

speak for yourself. which you did. then you spoke for "everyone else" lol.

You missed the “probably” in there.

His bat to ball skill in this day and each will keep him on a roster. So far this year his move to 2B has been a undeniable success as he's played it mediocre while hitting 8% better than league average across all positions.

Maybe thinking of Y.Cespedes?

"Yogurt" Sanchez SS 2B?

Norge Vera?

"Although he has plenty of raw power the native of Yara, Cuba struck out an eye-popping 379 times in 1,168 at-bats during his time in Chicago. With this release it can be said that Céspedes was one of the biggest busts ever for the team in international free agency. This will not be the end for Céspedes though, he could very well end up in Asia, México or another farm system."

Sosa is a success (so far) of giving someone a chance and letting him develop.  Offensively he's becoming very effective.  He still struggles defensively and should never set foot at 1B again.  Hopefully he can become a serviceable 2B with continued exposure.

Sosa is really going to make this infield situation complicated for Getz.  The kid looks firmly like a 110 to 115 wRC+, ~2.5 win player.  Only 25.5 years of age with another four years of team control I believe.  The challenge is 2B really appears to be his only spot, which will block several guys and/or force Meidroth to the left side of the infield (and I don’t love the idea of him as a 3B).  Good problem to have though, but would love to see some of these kids get some OF time.

We need more of these kind of problems.

Maybe they should send him to the Instructional League and make him a first baseman, an infield of Vargas at 3rd, Monty at SS, Meidroth at 2B and Sosa at 1B might be the answer, Sosa at 3rd and Vargas at 1B is another possibility, I’m pretty sure Sosa played more than a few games at 3B in 2024.

There's been a few of us here saying Sosa was the most likely to improve and stick, of everyone around. His history shows it. Hilarious how much hype Vargas gets and hate Sosa gets. Sosa has now been more than 50% more valuable ytd than Vargas despite fewer games played.

Who is hyping up Vargas?  I’d say the vast majority of the board doesn’t like him at all.  There are a few of us who believe there is untapped potential with the bat, but I don’t anyone is overly excited about him if he’s a 1B long-term.

Well, you see, Sosa didn't change his swing enough for Schriffen to talk about it.

Early during early summer, around the first Cubs series, Vargas was penciled in all the future plans while several people could not wait to be rid of Sosa.

And Sosa gets dumped on a crazy amount for his background story.  Dude has never been a huge name or highly ranked guy, yet he keeps beating expectations.

I think some people envision me having a notebook filled with me practicing signing "Eddy Vargas" in it, and I think besides saying he could be a 3 WAR 3B (not crazy given the pace he was on for 2 months), I've also said he may not be on the next competitive team. He's a place holder until he taps into that top 40 potential with the bat.

Lenyn Sosa is playing better than he is and it's still worse than an average player because he has no positional versatility and he's a 700 ops guy that is a minus defender regardless of how many times he gets a two run rbi down 5-0

Yeah he just feels like odd man out. Would be great if they somehow moved Benintendi this offseason and made him learn LF.

The wild thing is, if you go to fangraphs and sort 2Bs by fWAR, Lenyn is 11th of 22 qualified players, the very definition of average.

On a rate basis, he's about 16th of guys who actually play 2nd base and removing qualifiers (still requiring 200 PA'S though). So pretty close to right in the middle. He's actually in the top 10 since the middle of June though.

He's a perfectly cromulent starting 2B. If we had 8 more positions covered as well we wouldn't be losing 100+ games again.

Since 7/1 he's here's how he ranks among AL 2nd Basemen.

Avg .288 1st

Slg .525 1st

HR  8 1st

RBI 26 1st
