Free Tim Elko (Back in Jail)

He was drafted in '22, began '23 at low A, advanced to WS after 66 games and then Birmingham after 31 games where he played 30 games. Restarted AA in '24 and advanced to AAA where he played 48 games, and has now been the best hitter in the minors less than 24 months after he was playing in Kannapolis. What else could he do? Either he can hit or he can't.

Wasn’t he drafted at age 23?

I put this in a minor league thread, but the only reason I can see them keeping him down right now is if they want to see if he keeps his BABIP up for a little longer. He's always had a high one since joining the Sox (hovering around .380-395) but he's rocking .453 this year. He's also bumped his walk rate a pretty sizable amount.

His only blemish is his strikeout rate is still high, but whatever we're used to that.

I can't think of any other on-field reason. Off-field is obviously Vaughn's (relatively cheap) contract.

With Meidroth and Quero in the lineup and Vargas and Robert Jr starting to hit, things should start getting better. But still, I can't help  but wonder  how long this is going to go on with Vaughn,  I can't see him being put down to the minors. They're not going to pay him his $5 million dollars to hit in the minors. If he continues to tank I would like to think he would be traded to some other team for not much of anything. The White Sox would probably have to pay most of his contract.

The Sox could always use more of than.  It will be a rinse and repeat come the trade deadline.  They'll just be kicking that competitive window down the road and Getz will ask fans to be patient.  I guess a decade is too much to ask.  We are not exactly dealing with a competent owner or GM here.

Fans of small market habitual losing organizations always talk trades but never signings.  Competitive is such a vague and high bar for fans.   It's often being in 2nd place in July and moving down to 4th late August.

Or the old bromide, adding by subtraction and bringing up Elko is just as good or better than expending trade capital.

Elko will probably settle in and produce about the same as Vaughn. Sosa would probably be the most productive 1B until a true bat comes through the system without a position.

It   looks like  Vaughn is going to stay here and Elko will not be called up. If I was Elko I would ask to be released or traded. What else does Elko have to do in the minors to deserve a shot in the big leagues?

A minor leaguer trying to pull that would be wild. Teams would absolutely start looking at him like a diva.

Didn't Oscar Colas try some version of that? That doesn't seem to have worked out as planned.

Hopefully Tim Elko is not that dumb.  That s%*# follows you around forever, and teams will downgrade your value because of it.

His version was making a play to get called up, which still isn't good.

A minor leaguer asking to get out of the org is a whole other level. It'd genuinely be hysterical and pretty much destroy the "Tim Elko is a leader" talking point.

I would also imagine they've sat him down, mapped out what they want to see from him, and have given him a rough timeline of what could possibly happen if he met his marks.

"Come up with $6 million."

Should be close to $4.75 million at this point, 30+ games into the season.

Guess Getz will run it down closer to $2.5 to $3.0 million.  Although fan patience is already running quite thin.

You run the risk of aliennating some of your minor leaguers when merit-based promotions are blocked when the player ahead of them is objectively now one of the worst performers on one of the worst teams in baseball for the second or third consecutive year.

Vaughn's on the clock I don't doubt that now. Forum hero Jake Burger got sent down yesterday and the Rangers need bodies in their lineup. The same thing is going to happen to Andrew soon if he doesn't turn it around.

Tim Elko was picked in the 10th round of the 2022 draft. His bonus was $35k. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Tim Elko knows what he is and isn't becoming "alienated" by waiting for Vaughn to fail out, get injured or be traded.

I'd say that's a pipe dream based on current evidence.

The only way to find out if Elko can do the job is bring him up and given him plenty of at bats.

The attitude of some here and Getz is they want him to fail,

You still can't divorce stupid from this organization.

They should trade Burger for Vaughn.  Both drafted with similar expectations and baseball skillset.
