H. Reynolds to B. Montgomery "You'll be in the big leagues this year"

Recommended Posts

POTENTIAL POTENTIAL POTENTIAL...but do we really want to put that kind of pressure on the kid?

Colson's already folded mentally, so let's hope this Montgomery can handle all the hype and expectations, he's already up to #38 at MLB Pipeline and continuing to rise.

From all accounts, he seems like a pretty even-keeled young adult who's quite grounded for his early 20's.

Harold Reynolds is an idiot.

He meant well...and he was exaggerating in a way to pay a huge compliment to the kid, but I'm not sure that expecting him to go all the way through the entire system in one calendar year to join a historically bad major league team really is doing him any favors.

Not to mention the fact that almost every scout has him targeted for RF at the major league level.

In theory, he would play RF in the AFL and any offseason/winter ball in order to prepare.

I still think he's going to hit a wall with the better pitching and bigger ballparks in the Southern League, but we shall see.

The fun thing about Harold Reynolds is that you can never tell if he's exaggerating.

I hope Braden ends his season launching bombs at Charlotte to then get ready for next year. That would be crazy impressive enough for me.

Based on what? I'm asking.  Lack of sufficient bat speed, poor recognition of off-speed pitches, strike-out rate, lack of power, poor R/L splits?

As far as the larger ball parks, Braden is 6'2 220lbs, and some of HR I have seen on YTube are what some would call bombs.

*If * he hits a wall in the Southern League then he may spend a long while in the minors and could be a bust. It would men that he is over-matched by a lot of crappy minor league pitchers that will never make a major league roster.

Homers are seriously suppressed in Birmingham and Mississippi....old Birm stadium was a mausoleum for offense.

Hopefully he keeps it up.  His broken ankle right before the draft and never having played in the minors for the Red Sox could be the true blessing in disguise.  If he had played for the Red Sox and gotten off to a hot start like he has for the White Sox, perhaps Boston doesn’t deal him.

Fortunately they also already had R.Anthony and K.Campbell (2B as well) who could play the OF at the very top of their prospect list, along with Marcelo Mayer at SS...

I agree up to a point. I don’t think he’s gonna hit .405. There will be some regression on batted balls. The kid looks really good so far. I think we should enjoy that. Add in the fact that he seems like a terrific person, it’s easy for me to wish him success.

I don’t think the dummies in this thread warrant a response from someone like yourself.

So far the kid has been dynamite.
Don’t rush him.

Serious question: Let's say he keeps tearing it up, but of course not at a .405 level, but still looks great in AA and AAA. Is having him in Chicago by next June, would that be rushing him? I would say no, but want to hear from other of what's a reasonable landing time in Chicago.

Montgomery eventually in RF could fill a long-term hole.

Long-time and hopefully long-term.  The last good season by a Sox right fielder was Avisail Garcia in 2017.  Embarrassing.

My lasting and defining memory of Harold Reynolds' "analysis" is when he predicted that Gordon Beckham would be a Hall of Famer on draft night.

It was draft night? Wild.

I thought he was the one that said he'd be on the All-Decade team for the 2010s, but even Jeter and (less shockingly) Stone were super high on Beckham after his rookie year.

Him falling apart hurt.

Yep. There was a talk he could have gone first overall last year before the injury (at least I think I remember hearing that haha)

And then Viciedo as well...double punch to the gut.  Those were the two who were supposed to carry the load.

That wouldn't be a rush. He will probably be in AA by this June or July so I think next June for MLB debut is realistic if he keeps playing well. The key thing is what happens to his BA and K% when he hits AA. I think that may require some adjustment but hopefully not too long.

If he keeps hitting, no I don't think May/June of next year is crazy. Obviously, if he starts struggling as he moves up then you would re-think it but so far so great.

Late to the party, but allow me to echo and reiterate the above

He got fired from ESPN back in the day for sexual harassment right? So did Steve Phillips and both are employed by MLBN. Aren't there plenty of ex-players/coaches/GMs where they wouldn't need those 2?
