Ishbia taking control by 2029?

He wants to sell upon his death.  That's the reason for the broad language.

right, which is why I don’t find the timeline all that encouraging.  Seems pretty close to a worst case scenario here.  Still not sure why folks are saying only 4 years.  Jerry isn’t giving up control in 4 years if he’s still around.  Ishbia can’t force the issue until 2034, when Jerry would be 98!

Jerry tried very hard

If it wasn’t for big Jim Thompson the Sox would be in Florida, a last minute miracle in Springfield kept the Sox in Chicago but here we are for the 4th time in my life time talking about the Sox moving again.

people generally like me, thanks Tony. I guess when I go to parties, we don't talk about the various billionaires we like and dislike. I think people do that though.

The sticking point was probably the transition between when Jerry controls the option to when Ishbia does.

4 years is a ton of time.

Right it could be 9 years. And JR could croak tomorrow and his son could run the White Sox the next 9 years like he runs the Bulls. The Bulls yearly goal used to be more commonly known as "NBA hell".

In regard to moving the team.  I am not certain folks realize how big Chicago is when encompassing the region as compared to areas like Cincinnati, Pittsburgh. MIlwaukee etc.

Yes the cubs dominate but there is still moe potential

I know this comes up often but it cannot be said enough

Bay Area couldn't handle two teams, why should a dying Rustbelt city like Chicago? Do you guys realize that nobody likes the Sox except the people on this forum and, well now, maybe, all of Christendom? But I don't think Italians and Filipinos care if the team is in Bridgeport or Nashville.

There are a lot of analogies to draw between Oakland the South Side and the baseball team is the relevant one. "Trust the devil you know" is my only point. If it's genuinely more profitable to move the team, the guy is gonna do it and the fact that he has a house here means literally nothing. I hope you're right but I don't think you are. I'd hate to lose the Sox.

The one note that causes me concern was the statement in the release that the Sox said there's no assurance any such transaction will occur.

To me, this just means that there's no date certain that a sale must occur.  Jerry has the option to sell until a certain point and then Ishbia controls the option.  Theoretically, Jerry could choose to hold on to it and Ishbia could change his mind and not exercise his option to buy.

One thing to remember is that JR has always told his family to sell the Sox when he dies but keep the Bulls so if JR meets his maker tomorrow the Sox could be sold to Ishbia in a short time.

The Sox drew 2.9 million fans in 2006, good for 3rd in the AL that year.

In 2007, they drew 2.6, good for 5th in the AL that year. They were also 5th in 2008, 6th in 2009.

In 1991, they were 2nd in the AL in attendance, in 1992 they were 3rd, and the same spot in 1993.

Sox fans have shown historically that if you put a good product on the field, people will pay money to see them play. Seems fair. Ownership has not held up their side of the agreement.

I would bet money there is a death clause too, but this allows Jerey to still do the dirty work.

jerry's partners have not had payouts in a long time. if he passed away tomorrow, they would be sold right after. the only way it would drag on is if michael secretly loved the idea of being a baseball owner for awhile but i dont really see him involved with the team much rn. just basketball.

4 years is a while. 4 years ago, the Sox were pretty good.

Yes, I guess if anything this lets us know that Jerry does believe he will die and this puts his horizon down to his paper bet.

But given where I assumed we could be in the transition, this is only nice in that it's official.

We didn't make the playoffs in the 2010s. Very likely we will only have 2020, 2021 to show for it by 2029. It's just a stretch that is hard to come out of.

When the Jerry biography comes out from jeff pearlman in 2035 I'm anxious to see if secretly it proves that bullying works and in fact our fanatic behavior to get him to sell the team made him reach out to Ishbia.

Neither of them wanted to say anything, but it seemed like Schriffen going COMPLETELY dead air made Steve feel like he had to say something.

The ultimate trick. To build a 100 million dollar home next to the team you just bought and then...move them to a shittier market?

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was conning the world he didn’t exist…

I think the Bay area metro population is 5 million while Chicago is close to 10 million. Washington metro area which includes Baltimore is about 6 million and they support 2 teams.
