Colson Montgomery has arrived

Keith Law still hates the White Sox

Aaron C.: I don’t want you to name names because that’s all that anyone will focus on, but in all the years you’ve been doing this, has there ever been the son of an MLB player drafted in, say, the top 5 rounds who might otherwise not even be a top 10 round guy is not for his last name?
Keith Law: Oh yes. Tony Gwynn Jr. comes to mind. Kenny Williams’ son might be the most egregious case.

Guest: What are your thoughts on the recent moves of sending Colson Montgomery and Elijah Green to the complex to work on their swing mechanics? Should more teams be doing this? Seems like every org has guys who would benefit more from a month or so of supervised development instead of trying to stay afloat at an affiliate?
Keith Law: Right move for Montgomery even if it hasn’t helped.

From just one month ago...

June 5th is basically 2 months ago, and Colson went through a horrible slump after his initial bounce.

Has Law said anything yet about the mid to late summer version?

The other specific criticism had been about inside and high fastballs...having long levers and not being able to get around on them, but it seems watching him that the bigger problem (when he has been struggling to make contact) has been with offspeed stuff.

What's interesting is that Montgomery has still been quite productive despite hitting just 16/71 or .225 since the Rocking debut series.

25 k's in 86 at bats (29.1%) and 91 pa's (27.5%), just 5 walks though.

Shift the goalposts wherever you like, I am just saying your context was inaccurate.

Law's clearly waiting for Colson to slump or the league to adjust, because he's certainly not coming out and admitting he was wrong...or it's going to be that he overestimated the impact of the back injury/health issues.

Dude hasn't had 100 PAs, yet. He's a weird case. Sox rushed him his first year, and he responded, then got injured, so the prospect analysts had no idea what he really was. And neither do we, really. His BA and OBP are dropping steadily, but he's not really "slumping" and logging 0-fers over days and days.

He does seem to be able to field, so you can cross that off your list.

In fairness - he is still striking out on like a 30 percent of his at bats which is pretty atrocious. When he hits it - he is destroying it - but that swing and miss is still real. Tools are legit strong - but he’s still got plenty of things he has to work on.

last year I remember listening to Mully and Haugh or maybe some inside the clubhouse where Haugh stepped in. The question was who had a better looking future, Colson or PCA. At the time, both were scuffling. PCA not doing much in majors or AAA, and Colson scuffling in AAA.

By the time there was a question on here on Colson in April, I damn near wrote that it wasn't even worth thinking about Colson anymore. It was so disappointing.

But others kept hope and pointed out the one thing he did well was a really good thing to have. he hits the s%*# out of the ball. And that's true, and it was what helped.

The beauty of baseball is it keeps surprising you.

That said, I can't remember debuts this strong since Trayce Thompson and Gordon Beckham. Baseball.

I don't know if the Sox promoted Colson because they saw enough improvement at AAA or because they figured he needed another challenge.  Whatever the reasoning behind the promotion, he's been great.  Confident offensively and defensively, hits the crap out of baseballs, and is hitting for a decent enough average.  I really thought he was a bust, especially after seeing his only moderate improvement after the AZ stint.

Time will tell through the rest of this season and into next, but he could be the answer at SS and/or 3B for a while.

I really would like a lot of focus on our team on just a plan to keep his back healthy.

Yeah, the back issues are a bit concerning.  He'll probably blow a disc stretching today since I'm typing this, but he's been healthy since coming up.  That's encouraging.

Every time we get a 3B that can hit bombs, it’s THE BACK

im a bit worried for Colsons health future just because he uses his entire upper body with max force when he sells out for a homer.  Let’s hope that stretching program can prevent issues

According to BRef, he's got an 8.2 WAR over a 162 game average. So that's probably not going to keep up...but if he can be a 4 WAR player for the Sox, it would help the rebuild in a big way.

He's now in the top 10th percentile in xSLG, and xwOBA while being top 10th percentile in bat speed. He's 45th percentile in running speed and about 33rd in arm strength. But he passes the eye test easily as an athlete so not really that hung up on those stats.

I think scouts need something other than average EV to eval guys like Colston because it severely under rates the quality of his contact. Maybe hard hit % is a better singular metric. He's bang average in hard hit % but bottom 20% in avg EV.

You think you know but you don't know. I was talking to my brother in law and we both thought Montgomery was a bust.

Back injury, sent down to Arizona, the thought of getting called up to Chicago never occurred to me.

All I can say is wow, smacking homers and playing both SS & 3rd , keep it going.

I thought he could be Joe Crede-like. If he put up 15-20 bWAR at 3B, or LF, that would have been phenomenal for the #22 pick. It's just his rookie season, and the league doesn't seem to have adjusted to him, much, yet.

With no real explanation from the organization, I still wonder if some of his prolonged slumps were due to back problems, and how much of the mechanical stuff was more about keeping him healthy, vs fixing him as a hitter.

Not much to complain about. Oh he hits too many home runs. Most impressive rookie since Chase Meidroth.

Kind of makes up for Vaughn turning into Joe Dimaggio but I don't begrudge anyone.  It was time to move on.

Abreu had a great debut unless you don't count him.
