I think there is a chance they eat a ton of money and dump him.

which is kinda stupid since that's how they waste money.  JR doesn't like paying money for people not working for him. It shows how bad Sox scouting is in the FA market.  I can see often why JR is cheapass since he seems to get burned a lot in FA.

When did Colson Montgomery throw a ball into the dugout? Rojas bounced one into Vargas, who was looking straight into the sun at that point.

As smart of a businessman as JR is, you'd think he'd realize that his front offices have been incompetent hires and promotions and work to correct the mistakes.

He'd rather have sycophants who tell him what he wants to hear.

We should be rocking something like this post deadline IMO:

  • 1B: Sosa
  • 2B: Meidroth
  • SS: Montgomery
  • 3B: Vargas
  • LF: ???
  • CF: Baldwin
  • RF: ???
  • DH: Quero/Teel
  • CA: Teel/Quero

No fucking clue what to do in the OF corners assuming we are able to move all the vets (including Benintendi, which is likely a pipe dream).  Getz’s AAAA acquisitions have all more or less flopped with Fletcher now at a 95 wRC+ and ZeLoach at a 89 while the two athletes haven’t been remotely competent with Baker at a 54 wRC+ and Jones at a 34.  Julks has been productive (127 wRC+) but is 29 and sporting a .371 BABIP, so not overly excited about giving him a ton of playing time.  Honestly, would be a good time to find a post hype OF prospect who is out of options that we can give a two month audition to post deadline.  Getz should be creative here as he doesn’t have a lot of quality assets to flip this deadline and a post hype guy is much more valuable when you have playing time to give them.  Jordan Walker was a guy they liked last deadline and maybe there is a path to get him (yes, I know he has been terrible, but he is still super young).

With this lineup the defense up the middle is good but the corners are a bit shaky.

I would like to see if they can work with Vargas on his defense at 3rd base. Can Sosa move to a corner outfield position and bring in a slugger for 1st base ?

He looks slow out of the box, I want to see more hustle

Montgomery has never been objectively fast...but he should be able to hustle like Burger.

He looked athletic enough on the triple and diving catch...maybe more dynamic than expected even based upon previous reports.

Getaway day before the ASG explains a lot of the body language. Season is a slog to get through.  Had a ton of travel this week as well...bit of jet lag after the initial burst of excitement wore off.

What do you mean by “getaway day before the all star game”?

I think if you're able to sell off (or shed) all of the vets, barring other acquisitions you might as well drop Fletcher in right and DeLoach in left.

Elko is the problem at this point. He's still smashing the ball, but his profile (high-strikeout BABIP-merchant) is the same. I think the other prospects being on the team (and Vaughn being gone) could take pressure off of him. If Vargas or Sosa could become the generic Guy Who Hits Gets Stashed in Left because of Elko, I'd be happy.

It’s a wild thing to say, that’s like telling a beautiful woman her elbows are too pointy. What’s him being slow got to do with ‘hustle’? One probably might prefer 1.300 OPS to, I dunno, Duke Ellis.
It’s also never gonna happen, it’s why I think he won’t last at SS (especially as he gets a bit older), but looks like a perfect third baseman with his arm strength. From Pipeline: Montgomery exhibits below-average speed out of the batter's box but is an average runner once he gets going, albeit not much of a threat to steal. He moves well at shortstop, making plays with a quick first step, good agility for his size, a fine internal clock and solid arm strength.

He absolutely hotdogged that triple.  He would have had an ITPHR had he hustled.  He had a great series, but busting ass on the bases wasn't one of good looks.

He definitely dogged it, but there is zero chance that’s an inside the parker, even if he hustled the entire time.

He's a quick twitch type at his size but not a burner. Prolly tops out around a 40th percentile spring speed while still having above average overall athleticism relative to MLB. He's made all the plays so far at SS I'd think he can at least stick there until he's 29 or so.

Really promising start. The stuff at the plate yea but also he's clearly pretty capable as a SS. Uses his length well, seems to get a lot of good hops. Arm is more than strong enough if not pin point accurate.

He's a big dude with LONG springy levers.  He isn't going to have first step quickness, but once he gets rolling downhill, he can move.
