That sounds like good news to me.

Yeah but with the Sox history, they only add B/C guys. If they go for a top guy at a position it's usually a C/1B/RP aka guys who don't get 100M+ on a deal.

I said it elsewhere, but the devastating thing to me is that my entire life I've been surrounded by Sox fans -- friends and family.  The vast majority of those people are no longer watching White

Depends on your definition of getting better. In theory they should but this is still a team that is going to lose a ton of games in 2026.

Going 70-92 in 2026 is progress based on numbers but still no where close to "contending" is it?

And then of course comes the lockout in 2027.

With some moderately priced additions, this team will contend within the division IMO.  We are playing good baseball currently, and I expect continued growth.

You think a team full of mostly youngsters is not going to get better?

Well, they’re a 100+ loss team this season so 90 something losses next season would be “better.”

All I’m saying is you can’t be mad that they don’t spend and then also be mad that they didn’t do a salary dump. It’s one or the other.

Or you can expect they will waste money on 2nd or 3rd tier players and expect kudos for it.

This current team Colson/Teel/Quero is not on that pace.

That's under the assumption that the young guys, who haven't been playing like a 90 loss team for a little bit, won't get any better at all.

Not necessarily. They could see improvement from some of the young guys but then see a step back from others as well as some of the old guys like Tauchman, Wilson, Houser (was the team’s leader in WAR so whoever replaces him), etc.

If we’ve learned anything, there’s no guarantee that the young guys will improve as they age. In fact, most of the last young core was better in their early years than their later years, Robert included. It’s fine to be optimistic but without significant free agent additions I don’t see this team sniffing .500 next season let alone competing for a playoff spot.

Take a look at what the opening day payroll was for this season and what it is projected to be for next year.  Even $20 million added to next year’s payroll isn’t going to prove the point you are trying to make.  Give up now.

But it does. If JR takes Getz to the woodshed every time he spends $75k on a waiver trade, as you tell us every time there's a cash considerations trade, then they would have traded him for anybody to get that money off the books. They didn't.

Obviously those are hyperbole jokes that many posters on this site make.  🤣

We all know that $75K is a drop in the bucket in Major League Baseball money.

I thought you always say it’s too early for them to sign a top tier free agent.  Is that someone else?

All possibilities are alive and well.  Pick up his option for 20 million or release him for 2 million.  Sign an extension of his contract just like we would do with any FA this offseason.  He is playing like he wants to play with these new kids all around him.  I'm tired of worrying about Jerry getting his money's worth...not my problem.  With a few key acquisitions this off-season, this team could be strong and competitive.

I agree with you. Hopefully they will acquire some hitting this off season.

This.  💯  And some people will try to hype up these inevitable mediocre acquisitions to be better than they are.

We'll get a few Benintendis to plug some holes.

Besides, that only gets them to the high 70s in wins, if even that many.

High 70's? If they win 5 more, they're at .500, and that puts them square in the wild card race.

Candidly speaking, they should add to the team this offseason.  Too many young players on the roster now to throw away a full year of service time on all of them.

Yep.  Don't make the mistake that the Orioles made and refuse to make any moves around the young talented team

What's the goal? Getting good players in place, or being able to crow over $100M contracts? And if they buttoned up the bullpen even more, that would help.

I love how Soxtalk seamlessly transitions from prematurely hyperventilating about Getz not trading Houser to prematurely  hyperventilating about hypothetical bad free agent signings that may occur in 8 months because the GM said they want to spend money on the team.

I just gotta believe that Ishbia isn't hands off for the next 3 or 4 years.

If they play .500 ball the rest of the way, they'll lose around 95. They were 12-13 in July.

They won’t play .500 ball the rest of the way

The last rebuild effort and complete lack of trying to sign any significant free agent in recent years really soured me. The bottom line is if they aren’t going to spend money on anything other than one year gap fills, they are destined for mediocrity at best. The only hope is that Ishbia’s involvement changes things but that’s likely several years away still.

He’s a small sample size guy.  Houser is gone and we may soon see the rotting corpse of Thor in our rotation…

They played a half game under .500 in July. They're a different team from the one that left spring training.
