Robert stays...

Candidly speaking, they should add to the team this offseason.  Too many young players on the roster now to throw away a full year of service time on all of them.

Kudos to Getz for not showing to be a pushover desperate placeholder at his job.  Other teams are sharks, and he did not give in on garbage packages.  Could serve key in future dealings.

No, I think they may add bench player(s) and pitching.  But no big free agents.  They will spread it around on a few mediocre players as they always do.

How many holes do you see that they would spread it around on?  They basically have a full lineup of positional players now in place.  They can probably fill 4/5 of a rotation with ease.  The bullpen certainly needs help, especially if Taylor ends up staying there.  But realistically, they’d have like $45M to spend after Robert if they just want to maintain the current payroll.

No, historical basis.

I think they will certainly spend some but I don't think JR wants any long term deals past the CBA and it's hard to sign good players on 1 or 2 year deals unless they are coming off a bad year and are willing to sign a 1 yr prove it type deal.

Ah yes, the money will be spent. Playing the greats hits album again

If they pick up his option after he throws down 3 WAR i wouldnt mind it if they just kept him

All possibilities are alive and well.  Pick up his option for 20 million or release him for 2 million.  Sign an extension of his contract just like we would do with any FA this offseason.  He is playing like he wants to play with these new kids all around him.  I'm tired of worrying about Jerry getting his money's worth...not my problem.  With a few key acquisitions this off-season, this team could be strong and competitive.

All I’m saying is you can’t be mad that they don’t spend and then also be mad that they didn’t do a salary dump. It’s one or the other.

I'd settle for 70-92 personally. We're a long way away.

Right now, this is the projected positional group for next year:

Lineup:

  • 1B: Vargas
  • 2B: Sosa
  • SS: Meidroth
  • 3B: C. Montgomery*
  • LF: Benintendi*
  • CF: Robert
  • RF: Tauchman*
  • DH: Quero
  • CA:  Teel*

Bench:

  • IF: Mead
  • OF: Robertson*
  • UT: Baldwin#
  • BC: Lee

Honestly, add one legit corner OF and move Benintendi to the bench / part time DH role and I’d be good with that lineup in a transition year.  With further growth from the kids, it could be decent.  Obviously I’d be open to other upgrades, but I’d probably give the kids one more year to see who takes steps.  You also would have Ramos and possibly Antonacci as contingency plans at some point in the year.

As for the bench, Robertson would move down to a AAA depth role with Andrew demoted.  Mead competes with Vargas and Sosa at 1B & 2B respectively.  Baldwin fills in everywhere and gets more playing time when there are injuries.  Lee sits on the bench and dreams of one Teel / Quero get injured mid game so he can save the day.  Honestly, I’m not sure any major upgrades are needed there.

I just don’t see where you “spread the wealth” here.

It's definitely the case that between the currently under contract outfielders — Benintendi, Robert, Tauchman — plus 2 rookie catchers and ~5 young infielders, it's not obvious where the Sox would spend any substantial free agent dollars for position players going into next season. That's not to say the Sox will be a team without holes, just that the team is so young it's not so clear where the holes will be and you want to give those guys a chance to show what they can do. Of course if they want to go grab Kyle Tucker or something I guess I won't complain. And there's always room for more pitching even if long-term investments in pitching at this stage seem ill-advised.

Honestly, without significant additions, it looks like another 90+ loss season.

Exactly my point in my last post you probably haven’t seen yet.  But the lineup is mostly full and actually has some depth behind it.  Doesn’t mean you couldn’t upgrade, but we’re not going out and signing 1.5 win players to block guys like Sosa, Vargas, etc.  Pitching is a different story as I think it would be prudent to add a legit veteran SP (even if of the rebound variety) and some relievers, but I pray to god the org realizes now that allocating 30% of your payroll to the bullpen is a bad resource allocation strategy.

You think a team full of mostly youngsters is not going to get better?

Depends on your definition of getting better. In theory they should but this is still a team that is going to lose a ton of games in 2026.

Going 70-92 in 2026 is progress based on numbers but still no where close to "contending" is it?

And then of course comes the lockout in 2027.

That's under the assumption that the young guys, who haven't been playing like a 90 loss team for a little bit, won't get any better at all.

I'm sure it will be. As history shows though it will be spent mostly of retreads, has-been's, injury-prone guys and stiffs on their last legs.

JR doesn't believe in paying for game changing, superstar talent.

We'll get a few Benintendis to plug some holes.

Besides, that only gets them to the high 70s in wins, if even that many.

Again… why are people making “the money will be spent” jokes in a thread about the team leaning towards overpaying a player with a high ceiling when they could have easily done a salary dump today?
