I still say Beni is a fine ballplayer. 14 homers now. Excellent player IMO. Weak arm but so what?

Fine for a fifth place team struggling to get to 60 wins...but negative fWAR overall for his entire contract so far with the Sox.

Age 29 -0.4

Age 30 -0.2

Age 31 0.2

That's just not a very effective result for the biggest contract in team history.

Even Grandal was worth more.

I think I see one more win in this schedule. Maybe all the people who shouted that this team would lose more games than the 2024 team were wrong? Perhaps that is something to consider?

Since the All Star game these guys have been scary good, IMHO the future looks pretty damn good and I will repeat, sign some quality free agents this off-season and they can compete for a WC spot next year.

I’ve been a Beni fan since he’s been here, his first year was bad because of a pretty banged up wrist. The last year and so far this year he’s about what I expected which is fair this day and age for his contract.

Yes.  6-8 rookies coming through sure helps.  I sense that the team is responding to Colson and playing better.

Beni was signed not to be the big bopper on the team, when he came aboard we were still counting on big things from Moncada, Robert, Eloy, Vaughn, Grandal and even Sheets, we all know how that worked out.

2026 infield question:  Do the Sox carry 3 catchers to open up DHing flexibility with Q & Teel ?

1st Vargas also DH

2nd Sosa also DH

SS Meidroth also 2nd

3rd Montgomery also SS

C Q & Teel

UT Mead 1st , 2nd, 3rd, and DH

Yes, but maybe carry an older one that can act as a mentor to the younger guys and as a veteran presence to the rest of the team. It’s a spot that will barely play.

That or one that is flexible and can play other positions as well. I know there aren’t a ton of those guys but they exist.

I am aiming higher for the division crown, but I agree with the premise.

So is Shane Smith in the Crochet plan? Asking as someone who needs to make a move in fantasy and he would be an obvious drop for Snell and Cortes coming back.

Hard to say with this game.  He had like 40 pitches in the first inning

I don't think that would be the plan.  He threw a lot in the first before settling down. I assume the goal was another inning if not for the 1st.

...Okay but have we considered a world in which they're actually cheating?

No one is going to suspect a rebuilding team, and any opponent calling it out would just look like a sore loser.

Start cheating before you're competitive, and then when you're still hitting 4 HR a game from the top of the division it looks like a natural development? Pretty perfect crime.

Sacamano...

How many players in your league?

You know Snell will give you Ks, erratic WHIP unless he really gets on a roll, but much likelier to get the W's than Smith, who will have more and more 3-5 inning outings.

Cortes?  Why?

The difference with Smith will be they won't come right out and state he will only go 3-4 regardless of game conditions like with Garrett.

All the protection models have them at 59-63 wins now.

Hmmm....I have no idea if I'd take the over or under on 60 at this point? I expect them to regress back but the offense looks quite good now as well as the bullpen.

In a league with IP as a stat (I know, dumb) so if Smith is only going 3-4 that doesn’t help a ton

The trade of Hauser will make it hard to take the over but if these guys continue to hit maybe they can do it.

As you know, Snell is a lot like Cease, but only goes around 5+ innings on average due to pitch counts.

Smith has a lot of the same tendencies...minus the Cy Young ceilings of those other two.

Pretty incredible Dylan is only 3-10, though.  Will interesting to see what type of deal he signs in the offseason, probably like the Rodon SF deal.

Just out of curiosity, I looked up most expensive MLB contracts and Benintendi's ranks only 81st (tied with 5 other players) highest priced current contract.  It's only under Jerry Reinsdorf that such a contract is considered the biggest one ever and we're conditioned to expect that he was brought in to be a superstar for us based on what the Sox shelled out for him.

Even Pittsburgh has 2 players with more expensive contracts.   Only the homeless A's have a lower highest paid contract ever.

Christ what kind of non-take is that. Padding your post count?

What next you gonna tell us that baseball players play baseball?

Sometimes the best thing is to not pretend you have all the answers and defer to someone else who seeks the truth more than me. 🙃 Add one more to the count !
