Non-White Sox Off-Season Hot Stove

Given that Detroit’s number was silly-low, I wonder if Detroit intentionally bid low to let Skubal win, knowing in that in winner-take-all arb, his ask would not be absurdly high.

As for JR, his failure t
o build infrastructure (i.e. farm and development system), given his reluctance to spend at the top of market, is one of his 2 biggest failings.  Some of that may be on Williams and Hahn….holding onto those 2, is the other.

If anything can be gleaned from the owners actions this off season they're not in a middle tier spending mood . Plenty of guys not getting contracts as big as expected. Could be bracing for an extended lock out.

That would just be our luck as Sox fans wouldn't it. Just like with the last rebuild when the team was finally really good in 2020, then covid happens. Now it's the threat of a lockout, right when we should be in the conversation as contending for a playoff spot.

This has been a trend throughout the game for the past 2 decades.

This is why I don't think we're going to see a long stoppage. I believe the majority of the players union has started to understand that the top 1% having big wage growth while there's has gone backwards (relative to revenue growth), and they will be open to change on more formalized and transparent revenue distributions and a cap/floor.

A cap and floor benefits the vast majority of players. It's only negative impact is at the top of the pay band where growth isn't as big as it is in the non-cap environment.

I think its easy to generalize about the spending and youre probably right but Im not talking about a trend. I'm talking about this specific year before the strike .

It's a few days before pitchers and catchers report. While I havent invested the time to compare FA signings last year to this year there seems to be a lot more "name" players still unsigned.

People talked about why Murakami got what he got and why it was a good signing. If I told any Sox fan he'd 49 bombs this year like Suarez did last year they'd be ecstatic. Suarez , who had a 3.8 fWAR also, signed for 1 year $15M . I realize. he's coming up on his age 35 season . I also reslize his OBP was .298 his wRC+ was 125 and SLG .526 . Suarez must be thinking wtf do I have to do to get paid after that kind of season.

Youd think someone wouldve happily given Suarez 2 yrs $40M which was basically what Murakami got counting the posting fee.

Low on base, high K. That profile is perceived as more risky, especially as you age, so guys with that profile haven't been getting paid post 30. It also didn't help Saurez that the first time he was set to hit free agency, he had the worst year of his career.

In the past 25 years, of over 1100 qualified players, there have been 52 player who have run a K-rate as high as Suarez with an OBP at his level or lower. Of those 52, only 10 had positive offensive profiles over that period (wRC+ at 100 or greater). Of those 10, none of them have aged well: Gallo, Chris Davis, Stevn Souza Jr, Chris Carter, Patrick Wisdom, and Franmil Reyes to name a few. I get the hesitance with his profile, and don't think it's driven by anything but his production. He's a good player though, no doubt. Just rare type of success which teams are more hesitant to bet on.

The Sox aren't going to be contending for a playoff spot in 2027 so the labor impasse won't be the same as in 1981 or 1994.

You keep forgetting The White Sox Are Coming, Tra La, Tra La!!!!

Keep having a few more beers friend. The Sox aren't coming anywhere until Ishbia takes over.

Until then not losing 100 games and keeping their players actually healthy should be the reasonable goal.

Anthony Banda DFA'd. I'd love it if we could pick him up, lefty with solid recent ERAs and way more deserving of a roster spot than say Tyler Gilbert

Gotta think they will be able to deal him.  He’s only signed for 1-year at $1.625 million.

He’s a no-brainer claim if he makes it to waivers.

He's pretty much the same stat line as Gilbert last year. Maybe he's better than Eisert?

Yea, I wouldn’t dump Gilbert for Banda.  Prefer Eisert to both as he is a lot younger, Ks more batters, and showed he could handle closing.  Eisert’s stats are a bit behind, but he could become more than the last guy in the pen.

Eisert gives up way too many hits and his stuff is bad across the board. I am not comfortable when he comes into a game. I’d definitely prefer Banda to him.
