Austin Hays

I like Hays. He’s great as the short side of a platoon and okay if he faces righties with real weakness against sliders. As long as he doesn’t play center, he’s a pretty good defender. I personally am a Baldwin Stan, but will acknowledge that his routes in the corners were brutal last year. Letting him play one position more often would help that. Currently, his best defensive position is third base. With the juice in his bat, I could definitely see a poor man’s Barger and that’s a pretty good player.

Another possible trade candidate if he stays healthy and can produce. Overall not a bad risk.

I'm past worrying about flip candidates.  Build a team that is fun to watch and maybe start winning some games. Perhaps even a division title.  Yeah, we can always make the trades when they make sense, but they aren't why we should acquire players.  That takes away playing time for the young guns.

FWIW, Hays was involved in some controversy during his last days with the Orioles in 2024, when he posted the Instagram post below on Pride Night at Camden Yards. The "day of evil" comment was was seen by some as a coded critique of the O's Pride Night event, which was planned by O's Executive VP, Greg Bader, who is openly gay. The LGBTQ media took Immediate notice: https://www.outsports.com/2024/7/27/24098359/austin-hayes-mlb-gay-pride-night-day-evil/. Hays was traded to the Phillies (for Seranthony Dominguez!) a month after this was posted. austin-hays-v0-cpjrcnpvb13f1.jpeg.webp

I was definitely saying I didn’t understand the logic of it in the Bader discussions, but my flip flopping ass has done a complete 180 since.

Oh I understand opinions vary. If the Sox lose 100 again that dominate the off sesson again . Letting all the kids have a runway sometime wont help tbem win so it bevomed well you wanted the kids to play. Even as good as the kids played last year  adding vets in the OF and BP fosters more winning.

You dont want the kids getting too discouraged .

“The Money Will Be Spent” coming to life!  Also, Fegan made it sound like Getz still wants to add a mid rotation starter.  Feels like that plus a couple of trades (Sosa & Lee) and the roster will mostly be in place.

I believe there’s around $5 million left of the money freed up by trading Robert for Acuna.  That trade freed up around $19 million.  Seranthony took $8 million of it for this season and Hays will be $6 million of it at a minimum.  Not much money left for a solid starter.

We also don't know if there is a little more money than that. Maybe they can get a starter or something for 10-12.

Sure seems like there is more than $5M left based on rumored Hicks trade and how Getz talked about adding another SP during pre Sox Fest interviews.
