When he was recently drafted with the Padres. When he went to the Nationals in a 3-way deal.

Edit: it was because you had to wait a certain amount of time to trade draft picks. So he was a PTBNL in a deal even though everyone knew he was going to move when he could.

They also closed that loophole

Yep

It appears they prefer to spend money on the bullpen, and not spend money on rotation slots they have to guarantee while there is so much youthful starter fluidity in the pipeline. Better to keep slots open for someone young and building for a future on the SS.

I agree with the general logic and if they think Sandlin is a legit option out of the gate, then I’m more comfortable going into the season without another rotation addition.  I still wouldn’t mind them bringing someone like Verlander or Scherzer in on a one year deal though.  Just don’t see them spending that much more money at this point.

So the bullpen could be a real strength, Dominguez, Hicks, Leasure, Taylor,  You have to keep Eisert and Gilbert so you have some lefties, although we would all love an upgrade. Sandlin could also fit somewhere in the rotation or pen. If he has a strong spring maybe he is in the rotation.

Getz is making some decent moves for now and the future. You know when everyone doesnt go crazy initially at the trade on here, its not that bad.

Well, Getz actually did spend the Robert money. Two relievers and a lottery ticket prospect isn’t a bad outcome, considering  the realistic options that were in the table.

Austin Hays is also part of that LRJ money.

Murphy from the left side as well.

It is nice to see.  I wonder if the CME money is why.

I will again say it’s embarrassing they had to wait to deal Robet to make THESE moves.

Yea it is, but Getz had to do it in that order, or risk getting even less for Robert. Sooner Ishbia takes over the better.

Newcomb is the #1 lefty out of the pen no? Unless he gets a rotation spot?

Yeah, but overall embarrassing whether he had to wait or not

I am just glad it actually happened.

I think they will still sign a starter.

I’m thinking they are done after seeing this.  Bruce says the cash from Boston is all for 2026, which means that pretty much the exact amount of the “Louis” Robert money freed up has now been spent.  Seems like too big a coincidence how that worked out.

I don’t care how the White Sox feel. I hope they feel bad. I will cheer for wins and excellence. Faith is earned.

I will cheer for that as well but there's a journey that leads to that for which I also cheer .

If I doubt the journey I'd feel like a fraud only acknowledging  the excellence.

Sounds to me Hicks is gone at TDL if he bounces back, so they could get out of that $12M for next season.

I'm not embarrassed.

It might mean they reworked the deal to give the White Sox a chance to look closer at other players to make up either for the injury potential, or for not getting their first choice because of medical red flags.

Exactly my point. Just hoping those who had heard about the trade in advance might be able to share generalities on this portion of the deal. Not exact names , just an acknowledgment that there is injury protection or based on performance etc. I have followed baseball pretty closely for 50ish years and can’t recall another 2 for 1 PTBNL.  Aware of times a pool changed but the 2for1 seems unique.  Probably really overreading that something major could be in the fine print but I remember when Dallas traded walker to the Vikings lol

We (us fans) shouldn’t be but they absolutely should be. A team in the third largest market with a small payroll absolutely should be.

Edit: again, you, myself and other fans shouldn’t be but the organization, yeah

Edit 2: also not shocked since you agree with 100% of every move they make

I like the theory that the extra PTNBL owed to the White Sox is insurance for Paez' survival on the 26-man. They could return his Rule 5 rights, but then get him back as a standard minor leaguer.

Correct. And this isn’t a Getz thing at all, he clearly has a very specific budget to work with and is getting fairly creative to work within those limits.

And everyone has a budget. Needed in all business. It’s just embarrassing low for an MLB Team in Chicago. If the Sox decided to add a 25 million dollar a year player to the team tomorrow, they still wouldn’t crack the Top 20 in baseball this year for payroll costs.

Yeah I know and I’ll acknowledge it’s not just whoever is the current GM. Just dumb you have to shed one contract when your payroll is already low to add a collection of guys (Domínguez, Hays, Hicks) who lean more towards the “meh” side of the scale lol

I do not. I don't really see the point of Austin Hays, but they have him. I don't like the DFA of Drew Romo. This trade adds upside in exchange for taking on money. I find Sandlin and Hicks to be an unexciting return for taking on that money.

I just don't feel the need to trash a move. And they're already done. My complaining isn't going to undo them. I'll root for the guys they have until they're gone.
