Sosa traded to Blue Jays for minor league OF Jordan Rich and PTBNL

Featured Replies

The trade is whatever. Lotto ticket that'll probably never make it out of A ball. Let's see if the Sox player development can do something with him.

Not a fan of these kinds of trades but you're not getting much for a guy who is a terrible defender and with one season as a league average hitter with little plate discipline. I'd be SHOCKED if the Blue Jays turn him into a competent outfielder. Just not going to happen with his defensive profile. This also opens the door for Antonacci.

I HATE THIS FUCKING TEAM

Personally not sure what to make of this deal. I think there’s probably an inflated opinion of Sosa’s value around here, but hard to get excited about Rich. I do like they took a shot on upside, though.

Anyways, I like Sosa. Wish him well.

Getz won’t be content until every hitter on this team is slappy like him and Eckstein were.

Maybe the skeletons will suddenly fall out of the closet to make this make more sense but to me this is just Getz not liking Sosa's game on an aesthetic level and feeling unwilling to figure out how to use him.

And in 10 years as a member of the Chicago White Sox organization, almost every single year of that time falling under the purview of either Chris Getz as the head of player dev, Ast Gm, or GM, he never was able to fix any of those same flaws.

Agreed, and for a kid who is pretty small who will probably has a ceiling of a 9 hole hitter who can steal some bags, basically Acuna.

Look, Sosa has no trade value. He's the exact type of guy that returns nothing on the open market, and that is pretty close to what we got back. Honestly, while I don't understand why we handled the guy the way we did, doing absolutely nothing to give him a chance to succeed, I am glad they finally got something for him.

Yea, get rid of Sosa for a bad clone of Acuna. Toronto Blue Jays took one of our best hitters in exchange for nothing. That is why they were AL champs last season and we weren't.

TBH, I am open-minded to the view that it is near-impossible to teach the skill that Lenyn lacks at the plate. If the goal when acquiring young players is to prefer players who already have the difficult-to-teach skill, that's cool with me. But once you're looking at MLB production, I don't see much reason to put much emphasis on exactly how a given player managed to reach X level of production if X level of production is good enough.

I doubt this played a role in the decision to trade him, but I am aware of some data indicating some pretty brutal aging curves for contact/contact-quality on pitches outside the strike zone. That is, players do not get better at making contact at pitches outside the zone and their ability tends to fall off a cliff in the late 20s in a way that is sooner and faster than other hitting skills. So I guess one way to counterargue what I said above is that Lenyn, who really relies on production against chased pitches, has the type of game that is known to age really poorly. But I don't know how much I believe it and I doubt this was a deeply considered decision.

Sosa is no big loss, but what they got back is a downgrade. Its a money dump, even though he doesn;t make much, it's above minimum.

The handwriting was on the table. I can’t believe they didn’t work with Sosa in spring training on playing left field. Strange that we can’t find a place for him to play on a last place club but the American League champs can, something stinks in Denmark.

Is Sosa going to knock Eloy back to AAA?

5-7 140lbs out of HS. Not a big guy at all. No stats anywhere. But at least it's a position player.

Fun. Another tiny prospect. Hasn’t worked and doesn’t work. But that won’t stop Getz’s obsession with little grinders.

EDIT: Baseball Cube has him listed at 5’10”, 175 so that’s a bit more promising.

And the joke is on White Sox fans.

They trade him one day after the White Sox manager took the bat out of Mune's hands with a bunt to have Sosa face a funky right hander. The obvious happened next.

This Rich guy probably never makes the majors. Even with Sosa’s lack of any patience at the plate, he has more upside than Rich. A smart team would have eaten Benintendi’s contract, converted Sosa to LF, and played him primarily in LF and at DH.

The size info was out of date. That's probably how big he was the first time he played in a tournament sponsored tournament. He's being listed at 5'10" 170 nowadays and looks like he might be a tad heavier than that. Big enough to have earned a D1 football scholarship that he turned down to play pro baseball.

I updated my previous post. He’s still small though.

Who thinks if this was Benintendi’s last year they Sox would DFA him and keep Sosa?

I don't.

Never knew Sosa was so beloved.

They basically got nothing for him.
