let's give Nishida the same kind of rope that Acuña has been given and we can see which guy ends up being more valuable

not saying Acuña doesn't have a higher ceiling but I don't think we can assume we have seen the final product of Nishida after only 10 games

Regardless of performance, Acuna over Nishida is a no-brainer decision because they are basically the same player and Nishida has options. I think people forget that Nishida is actually a year older than Acuna.

Acuna is likely a bust but there’s no reason to risk losing him for another equally bad and older backup utility guy that still has options. More than likely, neither guy will amount to anything so it probably won’t matter at all in the end.

I think they will have to choose between Acuna and Nishida when Pereira is ready. And since Nishida has options, I think he’s the odd man out.

I expect you’re probably right.

Will be interring to see the length of Pereira’s assignment. This second time around, Hays was supposed to get nine games or so at Charlotte. Everson is only at two games so far and only one in the actual field. Realistically, he gets another week in Charlotte and a total of eight games, which would have him ready for the road series against the Yankees.

Would they try to rush him even faster for next weekend’s series against the Dodgers? Rehab duration wise that would only be 5 games, which seems very unlikely. More importantly, if the Dodgers rotation holds, we’ll face three RHP in Sasaki, Yamamoto, & Sheehan. While I think he may be an upgrade over Rikuu against RHP, his most obvious benefit is against LHP and I wouldn’t consider rushing him unless it was for that need.

Also, FWIW, the Yankees are currently projected to have two lefties face us in Rodon & Weathers. Again, that’s the series I would expect Pereira back for.

Interesting…was watching on my phone without sound for most of the game yesterday. That would be put him in play for the Dodgers series. If they swap out Rikuu for him, then Everson will need to start all three games in RF as Hill & Grichuk aren’t really options against righties.

Sox Machine had this notation in their spare parts column today. It is from the Athletic story on injuries:

Sometimes it reflects the reality of some rosters getting stuck banking on bad bets (the White Sox lost the second-most MLB days to injury from 2024-26), but sometimes a team courts that metric knowingly by amassing high-risk depth, hoping that enough players will stay healthy to carry the load (the Dodgers lost the most, by far). Other organizations that lose the fewest days just might be churning through options fast enough that players who look hurt aren't retained, and thus don't count against their tab.

One thing that caught my eye, just because it's suddenly relevant to the White Sox:

A few years ago, as oblique injuries seemingly swept through the game, one AL organization closely examined their weighted bat program. They talked to players and looked at their strength and conditioning rotational movements. They crunched the numbers to see how their oblique injuries stacked up to the rest of the league. They were just about average. Should they have cared more? Spent more time and resources evaluating their programs in hopes of avoiding one or two more injuries? Would it even have helped? In the end, that organization kept things mostly the same.

Rookie starter Noah Schultz (right knee patellar tendinitis) is “making good progress” on his way back from the right knee patellar tendinitis that sidelined him after Memorial Day and is scheduled to throw another bullpen session this week, Venable said.

And outfielder Everson Pereira (pectoral strain) looks like he could be back with the Sox soon. He slugged a two-run homer in his second game of a Charlotte rehab assignment Saturday.

Still no word on Pereira? Given he didn’t play Sunday and with a day off for Charlotte on Monday, I assumed either he was getting the call up or he had some sort of setback. Let’s pray for the former obviously.
