Derek Hill to Phillies, Pereira reinstated

Derek seemed like a really good guy and it's probably a heartbreaker to get sent away from this team, but better to get sent to another contender than to the wolves on the waiver wire. He's a really solid 5th outfielder. Sox ran out of roster spots with Everson on the way so I'm glad they managed to get something out of him. Given the player return I can't help but wonder if the international bonus space is somewhat substantial.

Hill did seem like a very nice guy. After Braden's game-winner the other night, the rest of the team mobbed him, but Hill came up and gave him a good, long hug, and said something to him.

Of course we are giving up international cap space.

Are these prospects actually good?

campbell is a 4th rounder from a few years ago, hasn't hit much in the minors, has some tools looks like. Potential utility guy:

Utility guys need some love too

Other guy Colmeneres is a glove first SS that is still stuck in A ball at 24. Probably just org filler.

The rationale on the Phillies side.

I really liked Hill, but there's really no room for him. With Colson's back acting up so much they probably had to keep Acuna around.

But why did we give up international slot pool? Hill certainly doesn’t have negative value, so these prospects must be worth something (even if very little).

Also, does this clear up a 40 man roster spot then?

Opens a 40-man slot. Neither dude seems like much more than org depth. Teams can still spend the minimum if they find a guy. The Latino markets are pretty much picked clean by now, aren't they?

They are both from Des Moines

pretty good return for Derek Hill

Well, that's an Oklahoma Hello! Or an Iowa Hello.

I like Hill. I think he’s a nice 4th or 5th outfielder, but the writing was kind of on the wall with Pereira nearing return. At least he’s going directly to a good team and isn’t stuck in DFA limbo.

Pereira is in CF tonight

Appreciate the impact moments he had, but look forward to getting Pereira back.

Saw something in the Athletic about a high demand for RH bats because leaguewide RH production is down this season. Wonder if that's why he actually got a player return.

Hill is a very solid player if used appropriately…I’m not surprised he had value. I still probably would have preferred keeping him over Acuna, but if they are the two last guys on the 26th roster, I guess I get taking this offer now and giving Luisangel a bit more time to see what you have in him.

Hmmm, I think it's nice to get something for a guy you are going to DFA, but upside prospects? The White Sox got the infield version of Derek Hill for Derek Hill. As noted, definitely nice to get something for a guy you're going to DFA, and more importantly nice to get a guy who has future value when you don't need the current value... but this is good process, and a likely nothing outcome.

If Pereira can play an average cf, it’ll really help his chances to stay in the league.

I asked AI yesterday who would the long term CF be for White Sox and it gave me a long answer of why it would be Luisangel Acuna.....I think the long rumored idea of AI taking over is highly speculative.

Acuna helps the infield depth. Though I will say, if you're pulling him half way through a game and playing Meidroth at SS the second half of the game, you don't really need to do this. Hopefully they can find a right handing hitting IF that can play 3B so they don't have to keep shifting guys around.

Did you ask it if Acuna is a switch hitter? Maybe it was trained by Getz so it also thinks he's a switch hitter.

I assume Gonzalez can play 3B right? Just hard to use him there with Murakami out.

I guess they could just play him at 1B and not shift guys around, even if it is a lefty on the mound ha

Campbell might be interesting, but Colomenares is a 24 year old in A+, who hasn't shown much of anything.

Acuna is starting to provide some value and he also serves as not just the backup SS but also the backup CF so he provides some useful flexibility.

Gonna be interesting to see who goes when Teel, Mune, and Hays come back.

I think Romo is out of options. I could see them sending Quero out to play every day. But will probably DFA Romo.

Gonzo probably goes back down when Mune is ready. Otherwise they would have to DFA Beni. Doubt JR would be into that.

Hays may not be back for a long time, so it could be moot, but it’s either DFA Acuna or DFA Hays cuz Grichuk is not going anywhere.

Romo has options

I guess if you're not going to spend it....
