And now after Teel's injury and Braden's ascension all 3 position players are in the lineup and making big contributions as mainstays to the core.Vargas trade looked bad too. I know it can't be helped to judge trades right away but it does take years sometimes before we know for sure how to judge it. Like crying about all those nothing trades turned out to be nothing to this date.
Yesterday at 07:10 PM1 day Gonzo with a double to pad the pirates lead. While he was at bat their color announcer reported that in the offseason near the beginning of the year, Jacob’s Dad encouraged him to step toward the ball to keep his hip in.Apparently his Dad had suggested that often but Gonzo always resisted - this reporter Chuck attributed that change to his breakout.Part of me calls BS.
19 hours ago19 hr I believe Gonzalez will definitely hit, so it’s a great trade for the Pirates. They get immediate help in a pennant race. Jury’s gonna be out for a few years for the Sox. With their upcoming 40 man crunch, I get why they did it. May sting a little from time to time though.

The roster crunch is a real thing, but I still think we should have used Jacob to add a controllable SP to solve that issue.

Gonzalez in this current iteration is power over hit and a 40 runner. Thome’s ceiling is like McGonigle or Weatherholt or something. That’s not a likely outcome, but if we’re talking ceiling, you just don’t know. We’ll know a lot more hopefully by this time next year. Also, he signed underslot, so that money went into signing Prosek. It’s complex.

I know Landon has a better hit tool, but not McGonigle levels at this point. And as I have said before, I like Thome as a prospect. I just don’t like the idea of trading an infielder who has already developed into a legit major league hitter for one who doesn’t have a massively higher ceiling than him. Maybe I just higher on Jacob than most here.

This wasn't Gonzalez for Thome straight up no matter how many times people say it was.Was this a good trade or a lousy trade? I have absolutely no idea. Could this end up biting them in the ass with Gonzo having a solid career while the Sox draft picks fizzle out? Maybe. The Sox are definitely taking a gamble here since draft picks, especially after the 1st round, are rarely a slam dunk. I remember when HS pitchers Matt Thompson and Andrew Dalquist were going to be great picks for the SoxI just think some of the arguments are being a bit disingenuous by saying this was simply Gonzo for Thome. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the guys the Sox were able to draft with the extra money we got from Pittsburgh will make this an overall win of a trade. Someone is welcome to bump this in 3 years and laugh at this post when all of our picks are out of baseball and Jacob Gonzalez is a starter in the All-Star Game.

I actually like the 5th round pick too, but doesn’t change my thoughts here. I just think Jacob should have commanded more than this. For example, two years of Gavix Lux brought back a Comp A pick plus Mike Sirota for the Dodgers. This is potentially 6+ years of control of a guy who has flashed an ability to both impact the baseball and make good swing decisions at the major league and can play anywhere in the infield. The historical performance of guys selected in the Comp A round suggest we likely lose this trade and a 5th slot pick doesn’t really change the calculus.Again, I like Landon Thome and love this draft class. Just think we look back on this trade and say “damn we could have gotten a lot more if we waited a year to trade Jacob”. Hopefully I’m wrong on all of this though.

The only way his stock goes up is with production in the majors, and he wasn’t going to get that with us.

Lux had top 5 prospect pedigree. They're not comparable. Jim Callis was amazed that Gonzo was all the Pirates could get for that pick. Lux also wasn't traded on the eve of the draft. Just me but I’m pretty happy about buying the annuity here after he was basically valueless a couple months ago. I don’t like the nepo pick being the reason it all happened, but, that’s a different discussion. I don’t believe there was some great unrealized value that the Sox missed out on. We could have tried to sell higher by holding him in Charlotte for while, but really…..
10 hours ago10 hr Granted if he’s hitting 15-20 homers next season and 90 RBIs, it’s going to be hard to watch. But until it happens, whatevs

I’d also argue that he’d be a better DH option than Benintendi and would have made room for him by next year.
8 hours ago8 hr If trading Gonzalez stings all I can say is get used to it because more prospects are going to get moved.

You’d be hoping he increased his trade value by having one of our regulars get injured for a long period of time AND having him produce during that period time in a way that would increase his trade value. At the time of the trade, I wasn’t close to being convinced the second part of that would happen. And even if I was more sold on him like you are, to need an injury to happen to get to that point is too risky for me.
7 hours ago7 hr I think the fact the Sox never even tried to play him anywhere else in the infield states a lot about how they feel about his defense. I don't remember reading anything positive about his defense (even calling him an average one).
