What’s our payroll? It’s been barely above minimum wage until Mune

How many times did we hear “Robert only makes 20 million, him being on the roster doesn’t impact other moves”…only for it to absolutely impact things.

If you took out Boston Smith, maybe the trade would make some sense. I can’t fathom how taking on a worse contract than the one we gave up required us to give up a legitimate prospect. I don’t even

Yeah, but we're not seeing a decrease in velocity or anything that drastic in pitch shapes. He's also not walking more guys. It's simply that guys aren't swinging at his slider anymore.

As fathom hinted at, lefties have been killing him and this is the second year of this trend really getting exposed.

This is the 3rd year of the trend in general, as he lost the change up when he moved to Seattle and that was his out pitch to lefties. The trend has been getting worse every year, and this year he's seen 40%+ more lefties than righties.

I wish we could trade for the pitching leprechaun....that sounds like fun.

A wizard and a leprechaun on the same pitching staff.....that would have to be a first in MLB history.

IDK, but he does have a pronounced platoon split (albeit at a similar level that he has always had)

The evolution of Castillo throughout the years is kind of crazy. He went from having one of the best change ups in baseball to having one of the worst.

Also in power pitchers it's usually command that goes first and then velo.

I think there are clearly going to be more moves here. We've seen multiple sources say rhey want one more starting pitcher, a reliever, and a catcher. Would love Holmes as the second starter/

I'm not buying the catcher want. I think that's just speculation not based in any fact. Bringing in a new catcher could be disastrously disruptive to the pitching staff and negatively outweigh any offensive benefits. I'm guessing the Sox are content with what they have despite the terrible offense.

Contreras

And Jose took some time in the year he was acquired to put it together under Cooper until he became a pivotal piece of the 2005 championship.

I could see Castillo having shades of that path with a shorter runway / quicker turn around possible since he isn’t NEARLY as much of a project.

Not to pick on you but this couldn’t be more false

Jake Peavy

"On This Day in Sports History: July 31, 2009, Jake Peavy Was Traded After Cementing Himself as One of the Greatest Pitchers in Padres History. The Padres traded 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy to the White Sox in exchange for Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, Adam Russell, and minor leaguer Dexter Carter."

C.Richard had a longer career than many expected...but a nothing burger overall in terms of prospect cost, except wasting picks on Poreda and Ring.

Why? He has like 9 Billion. You mean he is just standing by while these deals are done ?

He isn’t providing capital in a deal like this.

He’s the guy you’ll be looking at when they extend Mune this offseason for a franchise shattering contract.

The deadline isn’t until Monday…asking prices are always going to be inflated until the clock winds down.

This is crazy. He saw the same amount of righties as lefties last year. This year he has seen 80 more lefties than righties.

Hello, reason.

My first impression of this trade is not to do cartwheels. However, Getz and this staff have picked up some great reclamation projects that have worked out so Im hoping they've seen something with Castillo that they can address and turn him into a quality starter again.

Also, $25 million may not be a huge salary next year. Assuming a deal gets done, there will definitely be a salary floor. Teams like the Dodgers and the Yankees will have to trim payroll but at least 8-10 teams will probably have to add 30-50 million in payroll to reach the floor. As a result, you'll see some contracts that will look worse than this.

In summary, I'll wait to grade this deal but im giving our staff the benefit of the doubt.....they've earned that.

Maybe I just can’t read your writing style tonight and am a little too hyped up on our Sox losing a tough one today. 😆

I’ve talked with MLB catchers who have been traded multiple times at the deadline and their sentiment to getting onboard with a new staff is that it roughly takes a couple of days.

The production from our catchers being some of the worst in MLB history - I am SURE their interest in getting a catcher is very very real… as it should be.

Yep - and I still think they are targeting and bringing in a starting pitcher better than Castillo.

Raked over the coals?

We gave up a no name OF, a AA guy who was on no one’s radar before this season, and an MLB closer we’re paying $10M to no longer pitch in any high leverage situation. In return we get a 33yo SP with a solid history.

Castillo allowed 7er twice in April and 5er in a recent start against the Dodgers. That’ll hurt ann ERA. Outside of that, he hasn’t given up more than 4er in a start all season. He’s had 3QS in June and July, with another 2QS where he was yanked after 5 2/3.

Getz wasn’t raked over the coals. None of us should give a s%*# about money. The only drawback is Smith, an unproven guy in AA who isn’t doing a damn thing for us to help win games this season.

I must be missing the memo where 33 years old is considered young. And I’m all for looking for pockets of performance that can inspire hope, but this dude has posted a 6.09 K/9 since June 1st. He was around 10 K/9 during his peak years and his stuff had gradually declined since then. His track record means very little for the current version of Castillo.

Sox staff did work with Trevor Richards on his changeup to good results, so maybe there's something there. And of course the Martin kick change as a larger sample size success story.

How are the Indians and twins lineups - are they right handed heavy?

If Castillo production is on Robert's level, he'll be in the same boat. But I don't think Robert impacted other moves. Losing most certainly impacted other moves

Good summary - it’s basically where I am at with it too with the following points added:

  • I’m SURE more is coming and I think this INCREASES the likelihood that we MAY include Schultz in a deal for a TOR potential guy or Mason Miller or Hunter Goodman

  • I don’t like giving up Boston

No, Cleveland's best hitters all can hit from the left side - Bazana, Ramirez, DeLauter, Kwan, Rocchio. Minnesota has Larnach and Clemens.

And yet he recently held the Indians to 1ER in 6IP
