I’ve read up on the play clock for football. Reason it seems delayed is the ref has to see it go to zero and then look if it’s been snapped.

Plenty of guys are not in a ready stance at 8 seconds and it's not called. They just need to be looking at the pitcher.

The rule isn’t just eye contact. They have to be ready for the pitch.

I feel like Schriffen has gotten worse since we got Pham. Like he is more emboldened. It's telling that he keeps giving him compliments. Schriff is the Pham of announcing.

Rule states the batter must be "alert" and in the box at 8. It appears they define alert based on where the batter is looking. The pitcher can't even come set until then so the requirement is not that he's in his final stance or something. It's just forcing the batter to be in a state of mind that they could dodge a wayward pitch.
