If he gives up less than 3 ER than that's a quality start 1-5 for every pitcher.

Would love to see Garland win this in Minny for an early confidence builder. It will also add some extra drama to Sunday nights ESPN game of Buehrle vs. Santana.

I was more worried about contreras than garland. I hope Garland pitches close to what Jose did the other day.

I don't really worry so much about Judy (he was lights ouit there once last year) but more on how our bats do against Radke. Still, beating a team at their home opener is harder to do than most think so we gotta feel good going into tomorrows game. Only downside is that Herm should probably (if Ozzie is gonna be careful) go unused. Let's get the bats going early so that we avoid Nasty Nathan along with Romero and co.

actually id say Hermason and Vizaino should both be a no go for tommorows game....That said we should still be fine with Cotts, Politte, Marte, and Shingo hopefully.

Totally agree on that. Back in the 20s and 30s, a "bullpen" might've consisted of 1 or 2 pitchers (that's IT), because starting pitchers went the distance (even throwing 150+ pitches) most of the time! I think the current decline in arm strength goes back to the pussification of pitchers way back in Little League, and climbs into the high school and collegiate levels as well; when they finally make it to the pros, they simply do not have the capacity to pitch like their predecessors did.

This infatuation with pitch counts in today's game is due to one thing ....

Consider that back in those days, there was 16 ML teams and now there are 30. Pitching is a valuable commodity in baseball. How many guys from that era never made it because their arms were dead at 22 or 23 years of age? It's more than just building up these pitchers when they are young. Arms do wear out. Some just happen sooner than others.

You also have kids throwing junk earlier and earlier, kids trying to reach 90 and 100 mph on the gun, more weight training, more leagues, more games, and more specialization. High School athletes use to play 3 sports as a norm, now they play one sport year round. Those rules regarding rest and innings are balanced by kids playing 12 months a year.

im lovin it!

this is one thing i havent been used to as a sox fan... and thats good pitching. but hell if this keeps up, or even stays close to what it is now, we've got a helluva season on the way...

Jon Garland, who is scheduled to start Saturday, returned to the hotel during Friday's game due to the flu. He's questionable to face the Twins.

If Garland can't go, the White Sox will use Mark Buerhle, who would be working on normal rest.

We are gonna need Garland to flat out deal tonight.
