Brandon McCarthy isn't Cy Young

Why does Ozzie always have to include lines like this? What does he gain by saying his guys are not comparable to some of the best in the history of the game? Um no s*** Ozzie. He seems to do this constantly and I have no idea why. When comparing Toby Hall to Gustavo Molina, he might just be Johnny Bench.

 

He clearly means that the offense has been absolutely atrocious and although Hall will be an improvement, we can't expect someone coming off an injury to put up HOF numbers and give the team that huge of a boost.

 

That's what I get out of it and I'm surprised people read it any other way.

I was sort of thinking about this tonight at the game... If the Reds continue to tank, and the Sox hang around in that couple-games-above-five-hundred area, are we going to see the return of Griffey-Talk? Now that he's in a corner OF spot, it sort of makes sense. It would be an implication that Dye would definitely not be back beyond this year, but it improves the offense significantly, and it doesn't hurt to have another guy who is close to a pretty significant HR record.

 

I don't think the Reds have a whole lot in the way of pitching prospects besides Bailey, so the Sox could probably put together a pretty solid pitching package to entice Cincy.

 

The Sox might be able to get it done without giving up Gio but that would probably depend on how much of the contract that the Sox ate. Here is where I'm confused -- Hardball Dollars has him getting deferred money ($57.5 million total) from 2009-2024. He's only signed through 2009, though.

 

I'd certainly love to see it happen, especially if you can get a Bobby Abreu-like deal out of it where you're not giving up top prospects but still eating a lot of the contract.

I thought for sure you were about to bring up Adam Dunn. I'm impressed you didn't. However, I wouldn't be opposed to Ken Griffey Jr.

First of all, it's not really the point; I was merely bringing up another example.

 

Secondly, no one is Cy Young, so Ozzie is comparing McCarthy to one of the best of all time; how is that fair? McCarthy can't start a game because he's not the best pitcher of all time; does that make sense?

 

It obviously doesn't matter anymore, and I don't even remember when Ozzie made the statement, but it pretty much rang precisely how he felt about McCarthy, and even being happy as hell with the return, it's no surprise McCarthy is out of town. Ozzie making those comparisons is dumb.

As I recall, Griffey was willing to accept a trade to Chicago in 2005, but Reds ownership rescinded the trade.

Just now back in Florida after the whirlwind trip to Chicago and a 1-1 split on my first and possibly only two Sox home games this season. The weather may have been kinda rotten for yesterday's night game and the results were a letdown after having enjoyed the win in the day game. But all in all, spending all day and all night at the Cell sure beat the hell out of spending it at the conference I was blowing off.

 

Sports Illustrated in the What to Watch part of their magazine stated that the Cubs had led the all-time series vs. the Sox 29-25 while winning 12 series. Isn't it the other way around?

 

Also of note, in the SI Player's Poll, Jim Thome was the runner up to Sean Casey in the friendliest player question. AJP was third in most hated.
