When we had Maggs and Frank we had a horses*** pitching staff and a horses*** defense. Moving to the NL for inferior baseball is a dumb. You want to beat the twins.

1.) Spend money on the draft and the international signing period. We spent less on bonus money this year than any other team. A team that has such a bad minor league system shouldnt worry about slot right now. Invest in the best talent possible to use for reinforcements or trade.

2.) Instruct players in the minors on how to play fundamental baseball. We promote flawed players all the time. See Jordan Danks. A player who's strikeout numbers in AA told a story that he needed some more time to cook. The twins instruct their players how to play fundamental aggressive baseball with the same message at all levels.

3.) Invest your money wisely. No 4 year deals for Linebrinks. No using your best trading chits for things that are short sided. Think with a single organizational philosophy. Sure I want to win the world series every year. But it isnt reality.

4.) You are in the American League. Make sure that the DH is actually someone who can hit. Your park plays for homers, make sure that you have guys who can do that.

5.) Ozzieproof the lineup, or ditch Ozzie. You cannot have crapy grindy players anywhere near this lineup. He will overuse them in the spirit of flexibility.

6.) Tell the players that sure its cold in April and May, but the meal money isnt as good in Charolette. So tanking the first two months of the season because your peter crawled up and hid doesnt work. Wear a jacket or a sweater.

7.) Try and prepare your players for the grind of the season. Having guys who piss down their leg year in and year out is sad. The twinks down piss down their leg. They bring kids up and they just plug in. We need to figure that out, and mimick it.

The twins are a dangerous team right now. They have the minor league system and now a financial backing to build a dynasty. We need to rethink our approach. Because the slap a few retreads and pray on the futility of the division isnt going to work.

Having drafted and developed Morneau, Mauer, Cuddyer, Kubel, Baker, Duensing, Slowey, Blackburn, Crain, Valencia, etc., might have something to do with it.

And that he was traded to Seattle before that?

Seattle is so terrible they are irrelevant. I was literally only checking on Felix's numbers and Frankin's UZR on that team. I've even lost alittle interest in Ichiro sadly and he's one of my favorite players to watch.

How could you lose interest in one of the top 5 players in baseball the last 10 years?

The same way people have lost interest (pitching in a different league or not) in one of the best pitchers in the last 8 years (Santana) it happens for whatever reason. Maybe because he's getting older (like following younger players, though not as frantically as you) or that team having an underachieving year in every way.

I would think if Thome told the truth, tonight's blast had to be one of the top 10 moments of his career, ok, maybe top 20.

Pretty much putting away Minnesota's closest divisional rival against a team that didn't want him back. At his age, such a dramatic blow.

Wow.

Was watching the last part of the game at TJ's in Bourbonnais (Went to the evening session of training camp. Cutler had good stuff), and knew exactly what was going to happen with Thome, so I just chugged my beer and felt better about it. The solution was not to bring Thome back, as shown how he ran around the bases tonight, but it was to bring someone other than Kotsay in as DH. That is what bothers me, is that they didn't bring in someone else to DH. I'm not a fan of this Ozzie ball NL-style of play any longer.

Jim Thome, I hope you flicked off Ozzie or Kenny after you hit that HR. It sure proved the Sox wrong that they do in fact need a DH that hits for power in a park where power numbers are rampant. I'm more pissed that the Sox are committed to quite a bit of salary and that next year appears to be a rebuilding year, which sucks!

P.S. Castro for DH?

the shame of it is, in the playoffs NY will put Cano about 50 ft into right field and Thome will ground out to him about 5 times and go hitless in three games

Can they play Cano in the right field stands? How's Cano's defense against a base on balls?

KAAAHHHNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell of a day for the state of Minnesota

In a perfect world a great GM might get half of that right in every professional sport. No sport is exempt from having a bad contract. Salary cap sports help but there are still bad contracts.

It only proved the pen sucks and if forced your most reliable guy to exceed his normal amount of innings.

For the people saying "f*** Thome", that's ridiculous. It should be f*** OZZIE. Thome was great player and person for us, he WANTED to come back, Ozzie is the one who is to blame. If there was anyone to hit a walk-off HR vs. us, I would want it to be Thome. 1) Because outside of Mauer, Thome is the only Twin that I like. and B.) It's a reminder to Ozzie how f***ing awful Kotsay is and his decision was to take Kotsay over Thome.

Look at Thome's numbers between last year and this season. If you add them together they are about equal or maybe even better than Adam Dunn's numbers for 2009. 640 plate appearances, 40 homers 120 RBI, 170 k, 100+ BB.............. What would you have been willing to give up last winter in order to pay Dunn $10 million to do it again? Thome would have cost a fraction of the cash and no players. There is no argument it wasn't a mistake letting him go. He wanted to be a White Sox.

So, I hear there was a baseball game last night? Did anything eventful happen?

QUOTE (11and1 @ Aug 17, 2010 -> 11:34 PM)
Not dissing Kotsay, just pointing out that we dissed Thome by not re-signing a 1st round HOF'er AND a great clubhouse guy who wanted to come back for next to nothing. $1.5 million! And he ends up with the Twins, one of MLB's thriftiest organizations.! That's your first clue.

Management then continues to dis him on "The Club".

So, he will likely continue to strike out or GIDP against any team other than the Sox, while beating us repeatedly until the karmic debt is paid.

Come on, sports fans, you've all seen this happen before.

It's too bad they're not filming The Club anymore. I'd love to hear Ozzie in the clubhouse after last night. Kenny too.

Last night would have wound up being an edited-out game, I'm sure of that. All the actually interesting games were.

Then I would have loved to have been on the cutting room floor had they continued to tape up until yesterdays game.

I can pick about 25 things I'd have loved to see from the cutting room floor so far.

Wow. A thread cheering about us losing a crucial game because it's more important to rant about how much you hate Ozzie than it is to support your team.

You're a "fan," are you?

No thanks. Let's all pitch in and buy you a Twins jersey so you can celebrate your victory. I didn't realize that you're only a Sox fan when you like the manager.

Disgusting.

Give it a rest almighty fan. This was done in the heat of the moment in one of the most gut wrenching losses in recent years.

I still don't understand why this thread is in Pale Hose Talk. Can we please relocate it to the Diamond Club?

Are you serious? This is about what happened in last nights Sox game. Why would it be anywhere other than PHT?

I'm pretty sure they would have led the team in a rousing round of applause for their beloved Twins.
