So, give him a couple starts to either: Showcase him...Or to stretch him out in case Floyd/Humber continue to struggle. And if you're going to do it... Why not against a weak ball club like the Cubs? It's pretty clear pushing him into the mop-up role is not one he is going to flourish in right now, so try him in a different role. However, Zach has the raw tools to be a pretty effective starter with a pretty good sinker and a good change and a curveball that is sometimes there. Used correctly, he'll hardly need anything but his sinker. It's tough to get that sinker to play out of the pen so I'm interested in seeing if he can get a nice rhythm going and getting ground balls today. This aggressive, light hitting Cubs team should not do well against a sinker because I don't think they have much of an opposite field approach across the board nor are they patient enough to wait for pitches up in the zone. Unless he's absolutely nails in this outing, he probably goes down the instant we have another starting pitcher around.
