He was better known as an outfielder in high school, and he worked just 73 innings in two seasons as a reliever at Arkansas. Signed for $710,000 as a Draft-eligible sophomore after being taken in the second round in 2012, Sanburn pitched just 48 2/3 frames in his first two seasons as a pro, after a shoulder strain sidelined him for most of last year. Sanburn was healthy again at the end of the season. In instructional league, he was back to throwing 93-95 mph heat. Sanburn reached 99 mph as a college reliever, and he can throw his fastball by hitters up in the zone. His low-80s curveball has good depth, and it gives him a second power pitch. Sanburn can also display a tight slider and a sinking changeup, giving him more than enough options to start. Because of concerns about Sanburn's command and durability, Oakland has decided to move him to the bullpen. His ability to locate his pitches and keep his pitch counts down are less impressive than his pure stuff. BA called his slider a potential plus pitch, and mlb likes his curve....I'm hoping the Sox work with him and get em to start again. Glad Hahn held out for a good piece. Soxfest Posted August 31, 2014 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Athletics acquired DH Adam Dunn and cash considerations from the White Sox in exchange for RHP Nolan Sanburn. Chicago is expected to cover $1.3 million of the $2.5 million remaining on Dunn's contract. The A's were on Dunn's limited no-trade list, but he waived the clause for the opportunity to play for a contender. Dunn, who has indicated that he might retire after the season, has never played in a playoff game. The hulking slugger has batted .220/.340/.433 with 20 homers and 54 RBI for the White Sox this season and the A's are hopeful that he'll spark a suddenly dormant offense.
