This. Wasn't it after the deadline last year when Hahn said he almost traded Danks but they couldn't agree to the players and amount of moving changing hands? I say move him for whoever will get you the most money off the books.

Could the Sox get creative to add some more guaranteed money? Like a 4 year deal, 5th year option with a 5 mill buy out to guarantee an extra 5 mill on top of whatever he signs for for the 4 years.

Sure. But how would signing Shields relate to being able to trade John Danks?

 

It would affect the need to trade him, but not really the ability...

Detroit has a real need for Shields, and even if we were interested, I don't see us outbidding them.

 

And I am perfectly fine with the idea of Detroit paying Shields $20ish million a year in years 4 and 5 of that deal.

You know, interest from us could scare them into paying 5/100 mill+. He may be worth it the first 2-3 years, but I feel it would also prevent them from extending Price or signing anyone next off season. I think 4/70-80 is my ceiling which won't get it done.

Shields would be fine, but nobody wants Danks at the money he is owed.

Pittsburgh, Detroit, St Louis, Baltimore and the cubs are just a few that would have to jump on that deal.
