February 5, 201511 yr Victor Martinez tore the medial meniscus in his left knee last week during an offseason workout and is scheduled to undergo surgery on February 10. Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure. It's not all that serious as far as knee injuries go, but the timing is obviously quite poor with major league camps due to open in two weeks. V-Mart has to be considered questionable for the start of the 2015 regular season and the Tigers might no longer risk trying the 36-year-old slugger at positions other than DH. Martinez was re-signed to a four-year, $68 million free agent contract back in mid-November. Source: Jason Beck on TwitterFeb 5 - 2:06 PM
February 5, 201511 yr didnt know if partial threads needed to be combined, because this was also mention in a few posts in the 2015 Central Thread in The Diamond Club
February 5, 201511 yr QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 04:33 PM) Why is this in the sox forum? It's the offseason, news is slow, and this is indirectly related to the White Sox as the player who he was the best hitter for the divisional opponent with the biggest target on its back.
February 5, 201511 yr I was looking forward to April 18 with Sale on the mound in Detroit...ya know, just to see what would happen.
February 5, 201511 yr QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 04:56 PM) I was looking forward to April 18 with Sale on the mound in Detroit...ya know, just to see what would happen. A torn meniscus is pretty minor. He should be back by then.
February 5, 201511 yr QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 04:56 PM) I was looking forward to April 18 with Sale on the mound in Detroit...ya know, just to see what would happen. At least there should be other times this showdown can continue.
February 6, 201511 yr QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 06:48 PM) A torn meniscus is pretty minor. He should be back by then. Isn't that what knocked Rose out for 2013?
February 6, 201511 yr Its related to Soxtalk because they are totally gonna sign Dayan Viciedo when he is out til June.
February 6, 201511 yr QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 05:48 PM) A torn meniscus is pretty minor. He should be back by then. It depends if Andrews takes out the torn portion or repairs it. If he removes it, it is 4-6 weeks. If he repairs it, it could be 4-5 months.
February 6, 201511 yr Damn. Feel bad for the guy. Once again this shows the danger of signing these guys as they age to mega buck deals. Lot of Sox fans wanted him. This injury could start a rapid decline. Rapid.

Lot of Sox fans wanted him. This injury could start a rapid decline. Rapid. Now I have a feeling you reverse-jinxed MVP numbers out of him, haha. Will be interesting to see how much time in the regular season he misses, if any. Viciedo would make sense as a stop-gap solution...plus, he always gets compared to former Tiger Delmon Young in terms of plate discipline, line drive swings and unfulfilled potential.
February 6, 201511 yr QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 05:48 PM) A torn meniscus is pretty minor. He should be back by then. Sal Perez was 21 when he tore his. He missed more than 3 months. V-Mart is 36.
February 6, 201511 yr QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 10:55 PM) They were thinking about having him catch this year. Which is an even more hilarious notion than before this happened. Maybe the Tigers are better off having this happen in the offseason than during some game he would have caught in May.
February 6, 201511 yr QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 6, 2015 -> 05:43 AM) I tore mine when I was 15 and was out of basketball for 1 month. I tore mine 3 years ago and it's still messed up. Cant jog without pain.
February 6, 201511 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 5, 2015 -> 06:31 PM) Isn't that what knocked Rose out for 2013? Yes, but as a young basketball player he made the correct decision of having it repaired. Wade had the torn portion removed and has had problems ever since. As a 36 year old baseball player I would imagine Martinez will opt for the quickest route possible.
