One wonders who was working with Semien defensively all these years in the Sox system....surely it wasn't former Gold Glover Buddy Bell.

And did his defense deteriorate because they kept moving him all over the infield....or did his not ever being allowed to master one position lead to this problem? Classic chicken and the egg. Which came first?

BARTOLO COLON WALKED SOMEONE after a streak of nearly 50 innings.

Never would have thought he'd last this long after his last time out with the White Sox.

Bryce Harper got thrown out for not getting in the box quick enough after he didn't like a strike call.

Wow. Talk about a total ump show

Him and Williams we're talking s*** to the ump before that about the first strike call. That was just the final straw for the umpire

Doesn't matter, Harper still shouldn't of gotten thrown out in the 3rd inning because he didn't get in the box quick enough.

All about ego.

Fans don't pay to see umpires show up players, though. If you only go to one Nationals' game per year with your family, how disappointing would that result be? And then have to explain it to your children...sigh.

This writer at least has a sense of humor.

In unveiling a new lineup, new manager Dan Jennings talked about discovering a formula that would work, one that would be a home run on par with Kentucky Fried Chicken. “I’m sure the Colonel tried a lot of recipes before he came up with the secret one for the chicken,” Jennings said before the Marlins took the field Wednesday night to face Arizona. “So we’re going to hopefully keep working it until we find ours.” Perhaps it needs more spice. Or additional time in the oven.

Not only did the Marlins remain lifeless at the plate, but the pitching was poor and they allowed the aggressive Diamondbacks to control the base paths by allowing six stolen bases — including a steal of home — to equal a franchise record for most allowed in a game. That figure could grow to seven stolen bases, pending a ruling by the official scorer. “Needless to say, you’ve to improve your focus and control the running game better at this level, and it’ll be addressed,” Jennings said. “It’s frustrating because that team’s taking advantage of things that they see and have advance scouted as weaknesses.”

The Marlins, who came within one out of being no-hit on Sunday in a setback to Atlanta, were held to only four hits — with two coming in a ninth inning in which the outcome was no longer in doubt. They’ve gone 0-6 on a homestand in which they have totaled only 10 runs. Over their past four games, the Marlins are hitting a paltry .140.

I saw the replays and it looked like once Harper stepped back in he made a hand motion to show the ump how low the pitch was. If that is in fact what he did, then it doesn't matter what happened before, he deserved to be thrown out.

Thats not the only reason he was thrown out. It was just the last thing he did

If homegrown talent is one key to success, then credit the @Mets: They have 15 homegrown players on active roster, most in @MLB. (STATS LLC)

The @Athletics -- with 3 -- have the fewest homegrown players on their active roster of any team in @MLB.

I'm sorry...that was on the ump. Harper shouldn't have been tossed. The ump and Williams couldn't finish their argument and then the ump got short with Harper, who had already gotten back in the box and then stepped out because of the continued back and forth between the ump and williams.

There's a way to let the ump know you think he missed a call without saying "That wasn't even close", or whatever he said.

It was an 0-0 count in the third inning. Once he did the foot in the box demonstration, most umps would have rung him up.

Nelson Cruz, hitting a .351 that obviously won't stand up for 4 more months...probably the best signing of the off-season, not that it's helping Mariners lead their division because of Cano's pedestrian stats and troubles in the starting rotation (Iwakuma/Walker).

Jeff Passan retweeted Jesse Sanchez

This is big. Many believe he's the best pitcher in Cuba. Short right-hander but will get significant bank.

Sources tell me top Cuban RHP prospect Norge Luis Ruiz, 21, has left the island and will be seeking a Major League contract. #Cuba

MLB suspends Will Smith for 8 games. Should've deferred discipline 'til they had a common-sense conversation about foreign-substance rule.

Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale 56m56 minutes ago

Will Smith will appeal the suspension, hoping to at least get a reduction since he's a reliever. A starting pitcher usually misses 2 starts

Jennings, Cishek and Stanton booed.

Latos and Henderson Alvarez hurt.

Jennings 0-5 on headed for the worst homestand record in Marlins' history.

And from the this would never happen with Ozzie Guillen around category, all the players ended up skipping an important (and expensive) Marlins' charity function....only the coaching staff showed up. Being tired and the losing streak were the reasons put forth.

Michael Morse was one of the players scheduled to attend.

Any one see where Khris Davis for MLW was called out on an appeal after a HR. Ump said he missed home, but after the review, he was ruled safe.

What was the umpire looking at to call him out on the appeal? The review took like 4 minutes in the 1st inning. But umps will get on players for stepping out of the box now and slow the game down.
