Rodon Joining Sox Tomorrow - Working out of Bullpen (Initially)

No one has said he will be in the pen all year long.

They've said nothing about the chance of him starting this year. With that said, I think Noesi is pitching for his starting job tomorrow.

I really hope this is all a bluff, and he'll be in the rotation after Danks and Noesi get bombed a few more times. Wasting an entire year of Rodon's development having him pitch in the minors seems like a really bad idea, especially given how much the Sox are spending on Duke/Robertson. To me, it makes no sense to keep him in the bullpen all year while Danks and Noesi are pitching terribly.

As for the idea of just bringing him in to face a tough lefty, I would be very concerned about the adjustments he would have to make in warming up to get prepared.

This is a weird reaction to something that was never said. What on earth makes you think he stays there all year? And what they Sox are saying is 100% a good idea - you don't put him in the rotation right now for the rest of the year, because then you likely have to shut him down in August or September. You work him from the pen for a month (maybe a little more or less), then put him in the rotation.

Seeing as they are talking about an innings limit this year, that means they know he will be starting at some point this year, otherwise there is no point in talking about it.

Rick Hahn: "With Carlos Rodon's 2015 innings, we're dealing with a scarce resource." Beginning in bullpen maxes his innings.

Well, I'll take the blame for misreading this. I completely thought it said "being" in the bullpen and not "beginning". That makes me feel better about the decision.

I read it the same way and had the same thought.

The White Sox front office and coaching staff(s) know a HELL of a lot more about developing pitchers than anyone that posts on this board knows.

I'm just glad he is pitching for the Sox. Can't we all just be happy with that?

Honestly, if the Sox brass thinks Erik Johnson is back to his 2013 form, then I see the Sox having an incredibly short leash with Noesi. Still allows Rodon an extended stint in the bullpen and gives us a little more time to make a final decision on Danks.

you bring up a good point, re: short lease, hell, i expect 2 of the pitchers to be on short leases. but you can pencil in the 2 names.

they really are the main persons who should be on this short lease.

He will get his 160 innings in. They just don't want to waste them early in the year. If they did it now they would need to shut him down in August and his off season break would be too long. The bullpen, for now, is the right way.

Yeah, they don't want to end up having to Strasburg him at the end of the season.

for me, it doesn't matter if the sox had to shut him down early. the sox need to start winning, or else, there will be no reason for the end of the season.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Apr 19, 2015 -> 02:41 PM)
Better be starting in not too long...

As long as he is actually working on his pitches in side sessions, etc, I will be okay with this. The key is for him to still be able to develop, which is why I am surprised he is up here. Maybe they thought it was best for him to get mini action in major league games and spend as much time with Coop as possible (plus keep his arm fresh so that when he eventually moves to rotation this year, they don't have to worry about pacing him, other than obviously the first few starts where they stretch him back out). Clearly he is good enough to pitch effectively out of the pen (at least I think he is). Hard part is, harder to develop / work on things during big league games.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Apr 19, 2015 -> 02:47 PM)
Not a fan. I like him getting major league experience, but it should be starting (I know, I know, this is how the Sox do it with their pitchers).

Just don't know what the rush is at this point.

Let's hope this works as well as it did with the last 2 lefties I remember we took this route with (Buehrle & Sale).

Also from late last night, @JenLada wrote about Carlos Rodon's friendship with Brad Penny. #WhiteSox http://ift.tt/1GeFJOk

Hopefully this helps the sox establish a new relationship with scott.

All that matters is Rodon is dope, and in 6 1/2 years whoever is owning the Sox will be willing to agree to a contract that will pay him more than any other team is willing to pay.

Great Grantland piece on Carlos Rodon: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/mlb-carl...cago-white-sox/

Thanks for that but like most of their stuff it left me wanting less oratory and more actual analysis. Oh well. Rodon has a filthy slider, write poems to it. I just hope he contributes to a playoff team this year.

Agreed, also I hate how everything the media writes about us has to mention the Cubs too. Can we ever just be our own entity for once? Maybe someday...

That bothers me about as much as Sox fans being insecure about what the Cubs are doing. Hell I am more worried about the Royals/Tigers/Indians then I am the Cubs. I'd worry about the Twins, but they are awful.

We disagree often, but we are in 100% agreement over this. Not really even a blip for me. I'd drop 4 of 6 to the Cubs every year if you could guarantee me a playoff berth still.

I'd give up all six games if it got us to the playoffs.
