Will Ohman is another guy who was a considerable jackass. I've heard from a good source of mine he was a terrible teammate.

Ohman definitely deserves a nod. I hated Santo but really liked Kessinger. I thought I'd chime in on the hating guys for their performance issue. If you think about it in all your years of White Sox fandom there's always guys and always will be who cause you to groan when they come to bat or are brought in to pitch. Worse yet, when they predictably fail. But that's an entirely different kind of hate than the hate for a guy who's a horse's ass, despicable person, bad clubhouse guy/teammate, rude to fans, etc. It's two very different kinds of hate.

That season was amazing but I still have to give the greatest season ever nod to The Big Hurt's 1994. Hard to say how he would have finished without the strike but its real hard to beat a .353/.487/.729 slash line.

I didn't count the 94 season because of the strike but yea Frank certainly had another 6 or 7 seasons to rival what Belle did in 98.

Probably the only reason I gave it to Belle was total bases . He had 200 hits that year and 99 of them were either doubles, triples, or HR. 399 TB is very high and despite Franks greatness in many seasons the most he ever had was 364. Plus Belle played all 163 games that year. Never hurt or rested ,in the lineup every day.

I have no personal stories, but I guess he's just an unrepentant a-hole. There was a story about him taking a foul tip off his nether regions when he was with the Giants, and kneeing the trainer in the groin when he came over to help.

That's really the only concrete thing I know of. The rest of baseball's fanbases hitting him just seems to be a snowball thing. "It was once determined that we should not like this guy, so let's dislike him.

 

And of course he headbutted Michael Barrett's fist that one time.

It's funny that for a guy that's supposedly so hated by teammates, there are no stories reported in all these years except for a couple during his one year in San Francisco. He was with the Sox for eight full seasons yet no incidents were ever reported by former teammates after he left.

Is it safe to say Joey Belle was the meanest person in Sox history? Or is there anybody else rivaling him? Seems like he was a pretty big prick especially judging the one story about him calling one of the Soxtalk members a xxxxxx for taking his pic in spring training. That's pretty bad. I can see why some dont wanna sign autographs, but a picture? Cmon Joey.

Dunn, for example, should not make anybody's list, because as disappointed as one might have been with his performance, he never complained. He never made excuses or pointed the finger at anybody else or took it out on teammates (like that d***head David Wells did).

 

I would have to agree but when a big money acquisition for a key role like a middle of the lineup bat doesn't produce as expected it really sucks because it handicaps everything for that 4 year period since the Sox were basically stuck with him and the end result is a team that won't win anything for that 4 years.

 

Hate is definitely too strong a word for it but if you love winning baseball you end up hating everything that Dunn represented , a big money failure that prevented the Sox from doing much of anything to win.

It was 4 years $56 million. Not terribly huge money. Sox act like a small market team in this instance though. Teams have way worse contracts than Dunn's ever was.

Yea you're right but it might as well be $100M because it is the Sox we're talking about here and they will do everything they can to try and recoup that money by playing the guy . Same thing with LaRoche . Everyone and their brother knew he should be platooned but somehow some way the Sox didnt anticipate that and it left a gaping hole in the middle of the lineup against left handers. You just can't win with such a huge hole in such a key spot yet come hell or high water the Sox want to squeeze every ounce of production or lack of production for the money they are paying him at the expense of playing winning baseball.

Which is the same reason they won't fire Ventura. He's got a contract through next year.

He spent 8 years in Chicago. And he was only traded from the twins to make room for mauer, the local boy who just happens to be the #1 pick in the draft. And after he left the sox, can you really blame a team for giving a guy a one year deal when he's 37?

I've been thinking about this topic for a few days now. I remember when Sox traded for Larry Doby, can't remember when, sometime in early 60's I believe. Anyway, he got off to a bad start, and he was booed big time. It was pretty ugly, actually. He had his unique reaction to the booing. Obviously, the slump ended and he played pretty well, and he was embraced, sort of. I'm not saying he was the most hated in Sox history, not even close, but Doby received some pretty intense booing.

The problem with a guy like Dunn or Linebrink was they were genuinely good people.

 

Belle was a jerk. He was the one of the few post strike players who still acted like the fans were garbage.

Still need more patience with Avi. He's still learning and it's his first full season. This team isn't going anywhere so let's just wait and see how he progresses to end the year and in spring training. Let he and Trayce battle it out. Competitions good.

The Sox made the deal for Doby in the 1950's. Specifically October 1955.
