Most hated player in White Sox history

Featured Replies

Samardzija and not even close.

Cocky weasel looking loudmouth (and Notre Dame guy... and I hate Notre Dame)

Owned the white sox a couple games so we get him and I'm thinking this guy could be good and bring some "tude."

But has been a utter joke.

#1 for me strongly at the moment.

Navarro in a landslide--he combined a terrible attitude, horrific performance, and the opportunity cost of signing him over Clemens. Tough to beat all that, though Royce Clayton does deserve a (dis)honorable mention.

Actually signing Navarro didn't cost the Sox Clemens. Clemens' agents the Hendricks Brothers contacted Ron Scheuler after they singed Albert Belle but he wasn't interested. His comment at the time was (direct quote) "Roger Clemens is over the hill". Of course he wasn't but we also have pretty strong evidence that he wasn't because of steroids.

My point though was Scheuler wasn't interested in the first place.

Navarro actually took the place of Kevin Tapani who had a good year for the Sox in 1996 but he suffered a finger injury and Ron actually had the gall to claim that Tapani was faking the injury. The Cubs signed him...and he missed the first half of the 97 season as I recall because of that so-called fake injury.

Being a bust as a player though is different from being hated.

And I was told a story about Swisher from one of the beat writers. In the second half of 2008 after the Sox got Griffey, he tried to help Swisher who was in a bad slump by offering some hitting tips. Swisher literally blew him off I was told and just ignored him.

Mark

That's amazing. I really despised Swisher when he was here. I was quite vocal on soxtalk. I hated him.

Navarro is #1 ..............John Danks #2

Geez. Really? Mr. Blackout game starter?

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2015 -> 01:27 AM)
Without a doubt. He is one of the most hated players in the league by teammates. There is a reason that he needs to travel from team to team. He is truly one of the most dislikable people you've ever met. In Baseball he is on par with Bonds and sheffield.

Any stories? We'd love to hear stories about AJP the prick. Is he despicable in restaurants/bars to fans, etc?

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2015 -> 02:18 AM)
I don't "hate" anyone. Hate is a strong word for me. I don't like what he did to people and I know how most people view him.

Any good stories?

Considering we gave up a draft choice, pay him more and signed him for more years, Melky was a far worse signing than Laroche.

And yet, people act like Melky has done his job. He's been terrible.

I agree. Melky bothers me greatly. Only reason I don't totally despise him is he's pretty much the reason the team got sort of "hot" for a stretch and actually looked like it might actually wake up and vie for a wild card. But his clownish behavior in the Royals series and his lousy stats bother me to no end.

Danks has been average to below average this year. If it wasn't for his shoulder problems, he could have been one of the better Sox pitchers of the past decade.

He was absolutely money in 2008 and had 4 seasons where he put up 3.7 WAR per season on average.

I love John Danks the baseball player.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 25, 2015 -> 03:24 AM)
Danks had one of the best performances in franchise history in the tiebreak game. He shouldn't be close to anyone's most hated list.

Amen. You speak the truth.

Interesting somebody said Santo. Didn't he say he just hated his one season on the Southside? Was miserable? Kessinger was a big bust, too, as a Southside player/manager. I don't know if he hated being a Sox though. He probably did as well.

Jerry dybzynski cost the white sox the 83 title

As a younger fan and never lived near Chicago I didn't watch a ton of games growing up. I've followed them for a long time. But I don't really have a most hated player.

Dunn was one I disliked because of the contract and how he came in from day one and sucked ass. Shark is another I dislike. I don't really hate any of them.

Greg, I'm with you on Danks. He's a warrior. I can't stand watching him on the mound but what he's doing after the capsule tear is basically unprecedented. He's worked his ass off to get back from it and even though he isn't half the pitcher he was I really appreceate his dediction and love of the game. I can see the dedication to baseball with him. His body betrayed him it really sucks but he could have just easily half assed his rehab and made the same amount pitching in Charlotte are being DFA.

most unliked player for me will always be Dunn. He is a great symbol for everything wrong with the JR era the last 7 years or so.

The Sox scored 3 runs in that 4 game series. Hard to blame one guy.

This. Billy Koch and Royce Clayton definitely get honorable mention.

I've met AJP three times, and he is by far the worst professional I have ever met. Ozzie's presence didn't make me feel uncomfortable like AJ's did, but he'd probably be second worst on behavior.

I believe it. The same edge that allowed guys like AJ and Ozzie (middling athletic ability by pro athlete standards) make it in MLB is the same edge that makes them complete assholes off the field. Sometimes the guys that scrape by the whole way are those with the biggest egos imo.

This needs to be said again.

And again.

Dunn, for example, should not make anybody's list, because as disappointed as one might have been with his performance, he never complained. He never made excuses or pointed the finger at anybody else or took it out on teammates (like that d***head David Wells did).

Royce Clayton! Nick Swisher second and gaining.

Understood, but the players that "bust" become hated because of their performance on the field. It may not be completely fair, but it is what it is.

exactly..... good point.

I don't really understand the hatred for Dunn. Never have. He vastly underachieved as a member of the Sox but he never did anything else that was worthy of hate.

Dunn sucked but was always a good guy and a good teammate. I can't hate him for that. Swisher, however, cost us our best prospects, sucked for us, whined and complained all year, then we sold low on him and he suddenly decided to be good again. Plus he's the biggest "bro" in the MLB. He's probably my #1.

biggest bro???? pls explain.

David Wells didn't have much interest being here. He sucked.

I hate the guys I didn't want in the first place---Brett Myers, Wil Cordero, Jose Canseco, and Manny Ramirez.

There was a "ritual" that leaked during the 2008 season where the team supposedly offered up their bats to a blow-up sex doll to get them out of a slump and that wound up being reported by the press.

Because he signed a big contract then promptly put up one of the worst seasons in the history of baseball. He sort of redeemed himself sure, but it's pretty easy to understand the hatred here.

Sure if you're 13 years old. Hatred is reserved for guys like Brett Myers in my mind.
