I get why it's nice for losing teams like the Sox. But it's silly that playoff berths can be determined by extra relievers or pinch running specialists who wouldn't have been on the roster for the first 120 games of the year. Three yes, and maybe four. But you don't want to pay a full month's salary to guys who are only going to get in a couple innings work. Â Anderson isn't on the 40 yet and doesn't have to be put on it this winter in order to be protected from the Rule 5, so unless you think it's likely he is going to make the team next April, you waste an option year next year by adding him to the roster now. Â As the years go by, you are going to see the teams who have been loading up on signings (thinking of LAD and HOU in particular) start to have those guys hitting their 40 man roster restrictions, meaning that guys are going to get let go who should be protected.
