We're gonna need to focus on defense first than before hitting.

Might be more realistic than adding 2-4 mashers to the lineup.

There have been posts about Avi Garcia whether he could hit or not. I have compiled the following stats to show how he compares to other 1st year hitters.

The problem I have is Garcia is not a rookie. This is his 1st full year but he may have been around long enough to be able to figure it out or not.

LET THE COMMENTS BEGIN.

Great, we know Avi isn't a Hall of Famer. Seriously?

QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 02:02 PM)
The 1964 sox won 99 games with tremendous pitching and hardly any hitting. Maybe that could work again.

Defense too. Sox outfield defense is rancid. Trayce playing center would help a lot

QUOTE (flavum @ Oct 1, 2015 -> 12:36 PM)
They are signed to great deals, absolutely. That works in the Sox favor on what they could get back from other teams.

Now, I don't think the Sox will do this. They'll try to craft some scenario where a 2016 team has a shot to surprise...and they'll probably fail again.

Yep

Now they could continue to build will still having a shot to surprise. But that would require trading, Quintama, Sale or Eaton. The Sox don't do such things. They're more likely to trade Trayce, the 2 johnsons and Fulmer for Todd Frazier and loudly proclaim we can dream again.

One thing just came to mind... I could really see the team making a QO to Samardjiza, who then walks. Then a trade of Quintana for their cornerstone 3B or C, plus a lot more pieces.

Then the coup de grace... The re-signing of Mark Buehrle.

Southside,

my point was not to compare him to a HOF. It was to show not even HOF start out great. Most did, but not all. I just chose exceptional ones. You could look up others as well.

Avi may need some seasoing.

The thought did cross my mind yesterday when I said they could trade both Sale and Quintana, to bring Buehrle back. It would be a very White Soxy thing to do.

Buehrle, Rodon, Johnson, Danks, and another veteran or young guy, with Fulmer knocking on the door.

It would be outside the box, but baseball is weird. Sometimes things work that don't make any sense on the surface.

I'm for that on a multi-year deal (he slides into 5 spot when Danks is gone in 2017) assuming he doesn't get a QO. If he receives one, pass.

You know what would be great? Having an OF of Eaton-Thompson-Heyward. Your team defense would be leaps and bounds better.

Agreed. I wouldn't hate it (assuming they get a haul for Q), and Mark signs on the cheap (relateively).

I honestly see Buehrle as a fairly likely scenario if Q is traded.

You've been on the Heyward thing for awhile. No chance the Sox will be interested though.

Sox were interested this last off season before the Cardinals got him. He's one player in free agency that fits the White Sox and still is young enough to build around the core of Abreu and Eaton.

I respect the s*** out of his game and I know they were very interested last offseason. I agree it's incredibly unlikely, it would be a very welcome surprise though. I am ok with them going with FA without picks attached tho and trading. I just want the defense to get a lot better to compliment the pitching and not sacrificing as much hitting. In other words, I want the team to get close to perfect.

I love Buehrle but unless we improve the defense I could easily see that move backfiring. We all know he has the skills to pitch well without striking out a lot of guys, but I'm not sure he ever pitched with such an atrocious defense behind him. If Thompson plays over Avi though then that alone could improve it considerably.

We are not in the same situation as then either.

I know. I just think it will be way too much money.

I phrased it wrong. Of course they'd be interested in having Jason Heyward. I just don't see any scenario in which they pay him $160-$180 million.

For sure. They also cost more on the free agent market than the White Sox have ever spent before .

That's where you have to spend it. But they wont ofcourse. Probably just a few role players and the "all is well" speech.

By a factor of 2.5 or 3 times their historical biggest contract.

I'd love to get Heyward, but to be fair I can't really remember the last big free agent that was worth his contract. You basically have to over-spend, and in the position we're in with all our holes it's not a good idea to over-spend. It's highly unlikely to get surplus value (or even equal value) on free agents, even (especially?) the top ones.

From Jeff Sullivan's chat today:

Comment From Rexdale

Of all the teams 10+ games under .500 who do like best next year?

11:26

Jeff Sullivan: A’s, then White Sox

Comment From Nick

What would be the best way for the White Sox to fix their 3b problem? Is Quintana and his favorable contract too much for 8 years and$100m of a 30 year old Longoria… too little for Arenado?

10:36

Jeff Sullivan: oh what the hell. sign Juan Uribe!

Just wondering. Who is Jeff Sullivan?
