Agreed, which is ironic because in past years, people blamed KW for going after the big names.

And rightfully so, to some extent, because 2004-2005....the biggest name guys we added were really El Duque and Garcia.

Subtracting bigger, more expensive names like Magglio and Carlos Lee.

And then Dunn, Peavy and Rios, to name a few.

Which means the Orioles, Nats, Angels, Cards, Rangers, Brewers, Cubs....could all still be in on Jackson or Fowler.

That would require a significant bump up in payroll, yes?

Yes tho that all depends if uncle Jerry will stretch the payroll.

Rosenthal on MLB network says Sox still likely to get big OF and Desmond and Alexei still possibilities at SS. This offseason is slow

Would you rather:

Sign Cespedes and then sign Desmond to a 1 year prove it again deal worth 11-13 million, then offer him a QO after this year and recoup that pick for the 17 draft.

Sign Cespedes and resign Alexei to a 1 year deal 5-7 million dollar deal.

Sign Cespedes and let Saladino be the bridge to Anderson.

Thoughts?

I'd sign Cespedes and let Saladino play SS. I'd try to spend the $$ that would be spent on Ramirez on a RHP

The first one would obviously be preferable but it's highly unlikely they afford both.

If they sign Cespedes, they don't need much more than good defense at SS. Saladino should be fine. I agree that the higher priority would then be a RH starter.

We are all aware of the lack of depth, in that area.

Option 4 = Sign Upton, keep Saladino, find another starter.

Either way it makes it hard to see Alexei returning here. I'd rather spend the $$ on pitching.

I like option #4. Cespedes/Saladino/SP.

Dammit Davis just sign and take your money from the O's already so the rest of the other pieces can start falling into place.

I know we've seen this tweet before, but reread it. It now reads as (a few days ago) agents just begging for some teams to start getting in this thing. And putting it out there in hopes of forcing that to happen. If Nightengale is being used in this way all throughout, it is something that bodes well for Chicago.

Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale Jan 6

The outfield market now will start moving, agents believe, starting with Yoenis Cespedes and Justin Upton.

Thinking out loud - Sox seemed to have held firm to that three year limit and haven't been knocked out of Cespedes/Upton derby.

If SOMEONE offered a 5 or 6 year deal they would have signed. As an outside observer, it looks like the Sox have a good read on the market.

But what about the children of Johnny Red Kerr:

George Ofman ‏@georgeofman 9m9 minutes ago Chicago, IL

Word is the Sox might go to four years on either Cespedes or Upton. The latter is intrigued with the south side.

So Upton has gone from being uninterested in playing for the Sox to intrigued, now?

Can anyone else envision Upton getting a 4 year deal with an opt out after sat year 2?

When it's your best chance of getting paid, interest picks up quickly.

Absolutely, makes a lot of sense for everyone involved. Sox wouldn't want to give up a draft pick for a 1-year rental, and Upton would be a FA before the huge 2018 class.

I think Ofman might have been fed something to pressure Cespedes. Although Uptons market is very limited.

Between Upton and Cespedes, which guy do you think is more likely to sign with the Sox?

Really! The sox have held to the 3 year deal but as upton becomes interested it might go 4?

It's called negotiations.

Not rabbit and have no sources, but Cespedes is the easy pick here. Likely to get more money and has Abreu here. Upton has no ties at all to Chicago and draft pick attached.

The best part about the report, if true, is that they're willing to go 4 years

His guess is as good as ours.
