Early Trade Speculation

Featured Replies

As some teams continue to tank - we may be able to begin identifying trade partners before the deadline. It's pretty clear that our ideal targets are a left handed hitting power bat and a RHSP.

Right now it looks like these teams will be potential early sellers:

Reds

Braves

Marlins

Padres

Any players on these teams a target?

So far I'm not counting any AL teams. The Astros and Yankees won't fold it in... And I doubt the Twins trade with us.

For me, I'm keeping an eye on Jay Bruce, CarGo, and Terhan.

I am sure we are talking to teams as we speak. Realistically, any deals won't come until after Memorial Day, at the earliest.

I have no idea what we can offer these teams, besides salary relief.

Agreed. Our system has looked really bad this year... The shark trade is painful right now.

Our system looked pretty bad in April last year too, then a bunch of players recovered and made adjustments. These kids are moving up a level.

Anyway, I'd be fine with a Carl Everett level addition. Older vet, late in contract. Tough to find fits. Wil Myers was an interesting mention.

Chris Carter maybe. Brewers could be happy to get a piece while building. Shouldn't cost much.

Jay Bruce will continue to be named a lot. He's negative WAR right now because of defensive metrics, but that shouldn't be a problem if we move him to DH. He's hitting more or less like old Jay Bruce - a little worse, but certainly better than the performance we've gotten out of DH. The Reds would still love to shed that salary and he isn't good enough for them to be asking for Fulmer or Anderson for him.

Yes, a 108 wRC+ would be a big upgrade and he shouldn't cost much to acquire. Side note, I think it's funny that Avi is hitting .186 with a near 30% strikeout rate yet somehow has a positive WAR for the first time in his career (looks to be due to his baserunning).

I'll still give Avi more rope in light of his past couple days. Gonzalez, Danks, Turner, and Johnson likely will all get a spin as well before the trading begins.

With our system looking pretty weak outside of the top 3, I don't think we're going to acquire nor do I think we need to trade for a star. Just find someone that can be average against rhp and go from there.

I'd say if the Sox are sitting around 55-40 in July you have to consider moving Adams if that's what it takes to get a deal done for an impact bat. Notice I said impact. Would have to be way more than just an incremental upgrade.

I do wonder what it would take to grab Kevin Kiermaier. LHH, god defensively in CF (pushes AJax to left and Melky to DH), he isn't the world's greatest hitter but he's average-to-above-average at the plate with pretty damn good baserunning. Sox would have to wait a couple months for the AL East to shake itself out because as of now the Rays have a chance and wont be sellers quite yet.

I would check the price on Sean Doolittle, he is back after sitting out all of last year with TJ. I think the addition of a power lefty to the pen, that you could pair with Nate Jones would be huge.

Make Atlanta an offer they couldnt refuse for Freddie Freeman

Names I would target:

Jay Bruce

Carlos Gonzalez

Freddie Freeman

Julio Teheran

Odubel Herrera

Sonny Gray

Josh Reddick

You can tell its going to be one of those years for the A's. The ALW is down because the Astros blow, Beane wont be selling this year.

I think that's absolutely fair as well.

Time to start pre-production for Moneyball II.

Adams is definitely the one to be shopped.

Yeah I don't know why so many are assuming the A's are going to be sellers. They just called up a top prospect, the AL West looks mediocre from top to bottom and they're currently in 2nd place, and Rich Hill is pitching like his 4 starts last year weren't a fluke. They'll probably be in the thick of things by the deadline.

I agree. I think he can be a center piece for a Gonzalez and McGee trade.

I thought Oakland was going to be a .500 team this year, last year they were doomed by a bad bullpen and a terrible defense. I don't like the Astros' pitching, especially their starting staff and the Angels are meh. The Rangers should run away with the division.

I think Seattle is a bit underrated and the Rangers are a bit overrated, I think they're at least on par with Texas. The Rangers' pitching is pretty bad, even when Darvish comes back. Not sure why they should run away with anything, they're as mediocre as anyone else.

Michael Ynoa trade.

Why would the Sox want to do that?

120 mill encumbrance for a 20ish HR guy.

Just get Markakis for salary relief.

Astros, after several years of hard work evaluating, drafting, and developing, are moving backwards, abetted by seriously dinging their farm system for "elite" level talent like Carlos Gomez (and others).

With Jackson and Eaton, is improved outfield defense really the highest priority?

An adequate left fielder would be fine, if he provided the bat they need. Or Melky could stay in left, and they could acquire a DH.
