2020 Election Thoughts

You act like that's a result of Joe Biden.  That's laughable.  DJT would be re-elected easily if COVID didn't happen.  Those are facts.

Remember this though - every president faces crises. He’s sort of lucky it took him this long to have a real one. Might have something to do with how well set up the government was to run after 2016, it takes a while to dismantle that level of effectiveness and skill.

Agree to disagree. I think covid drove up GOP numbes huge. Those rural areas hate lockdowns and blame Democrats for it.

Thats why (imo) the polling was off. They didnt realize how many people in non metro areas blame Dems for this past year.

Exactly.

Sanders can win tiny Vermont, and AOC can win her tiny house district. But over a larger voting bloc, or nationwide, a wider appeal often helps to carry the day.

the reason they have a difficult time winning largely stems from the massive amount of propaganda that is spewed about them on network television.  people actually think Sanders wants the government to take over the means of production and run everything like Stalin, it's fucking absurd.  AOC has had to kiss corporate ass to remain relevant in her own party.

So your job is not to run Sanders or AOC and watch the attacks become effective.

It’s to get the grass roots work done to build support for years. Decades even.

”I agree with you 100%. Now make me do it.”

I dont know if we could test that or not. Have any self-identified "socialists" won nationwide electoral victories?

At the same time, would there be absolutely no other crises to test the current president? If there would be other crises, I have no doubt Trump would have bungled the responses to those as well.

Biden won because Trump makes rich white people feel gross.  Biden has gotten his ass stomped every single time he has ran for office.  Anyone would have beaten Trump this election

For the record, 2016 wasn't the first time Trump ran for President.

While I agree that there are branding issues, there also are reasons why self-described "socialists" have yet to win the nomination of a major political party.

You'd think so, but Trump is outperforming the 2018 midterm results by quite a bit. It could be because he's Trump and some groups of people just like him. I think COVID changed the minds of a lot of left leaning independents, but not a lot of right leaning ones. But we know that COVID absolutely riled up his base. You can argue that COVID also riled up the democrats as well. It could have very well been a wash in the end with a slight advantage to Biden.

Exit polling showed that people thought the economy was the biggest factor for them 33%. Only 20% said COVID.

Henry Wallace from Iowa, FDR's VP.

Other than that, the closest would be Paul Wellstone or maybe LaFollette from Wisconsin a century ago. Hearst was more populist than socialist.   Or the AFL-CIO leaders in the 50s 60s 70s.

Arguably, Rep. Clyburn in SC played kingmaker twice, Obama over HRClinton and then "pragmatically" rejecting Sanders for Biden.

It's crazy how one guy basically decided the primary.

As a Bernie supporter, I was pretty salty. Without that huge win in SC (Bernie was polling within 10 points before Clyburn's endorsement and he lost by 50 points), Biden doesn't get the moderates to consolidate behind him before Super Tuesday.

Dems would have rather lost to trump than nominate Bernie and I’m not sure I could be convinced otherwise.

Not even close.

Trump is an unique threat to American Democracy. The biggest knock on Bernie is that he would have been too great of a risk against Trump.

If we are in a dream world why not just then have Trump claim PA and put the electoral votes on a chart with a black sharpie.
