I think he understands that playoffs are a different beast. Best players play, you are no longer talking about development and helping players overcome.

Here's Cooper's White Sox trivia note: October 4, 1981 - Jerry Hairston’s grand slam helped beat the Twins 13-12 setting off Bill Veeck’s original exploding scoreboard for the last time. The blast came off future White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper. The Sox trailed in the game 12-5 before scoring eight unanswered runs in the final two innings with Hairston driving home the game winner. The victory gave the Sox their first winning year since 1977 at 54-52. The game also marked the end of broadcaster Harry Caray’s association with the Sox after 11 seasons.

The funny thing was that Rongey was obviously going to be a Sox apologist for the most part, although he would sometimes grill the team for their poor performance. Either way, Rongey definitely wasn’t unfair with his critique, yet Cooper would still call in and completely flip out on his ass. 🤣

Just got off the phone with a good friend of his. Don died of a heart attack. His friend said he lived life to the end still with a beer in his hand and a chew in his mouth. His friend had known him literally since they were kids.

Will's in game management is bad. Thats not what is stopping the Sox from the world series though. For that you can look to the entire starting rotation, Kolson, Mune, and friends.

I believe the White Sox have shown that they can compete with any team. But I do believe that Will‘s lack of experience and his tendencies to make some in game decisions will prevent the White Sox from going all the way to the World Series. At least that will be one factor. I know he’s done a very good job for a relatively young manager….only two years, but I think he makes mistakes that more veteran managers do not make. Your thoughts?

I could see a game of Kay for 3-4 innings, Fedde follows, then back to lefties from pen Smith, Schultz or Newcombe. Have to watch Smith as he is not used to back to back days . Schultz has had at least two days off between each appearance.

Freddy Peralta would have been a good pickup. He's got a 3.60 ERA across nine starts for the Tampa Bay Rays since his trade from the Mets. They've made it clear in their actions they don't want him pitching for them this year - for whatever reason.

After he was fired in 2020 as far as I know the White Sox did nothing to honor him. Thats not right and now its too late. Don Cooper was with the org for more than 3 decades.

The joke is OVAH after Sunday's game, he will not be on the roster.

It used to crack me up when he would call in to Rongey after a game, when he clearly had one too many adult pops, to argue with Chris 😂

He seems to have issues pitching out of the stretch. I think they need to simplify his delivery. Maybe have him pitch out of the stretch all the time so he's more used to it. That could be an off-season adjustment. You can't trust him for more than 3 innings at the moment.

I know Newcomb has been bad a couple times in a row, but to throw him in with those other three is crazy. He has really had a very good year, very good. I think his arm, hopefully only for now, is falling off from overuse. I hope he can recover and be outstanding again. In fact, about a month ago Schriffen and Stoney were discussing who is the Sox’s 2nd MVP after Vargas. Right away Schriffen went with Peters (who was back to being hot at the plate), and Peters was my choice too. But Stoney said he would go with Newcomb because he has come in for shorts stits and long 3-inning outings and he has been really good and dependable whenever/ however used. And as I thought about it, Stoney convinced me he was correct. Now I know Newcomb’s had, I think, two clunkers in a row, but come on people; our memories have to last longer than just the last week or so.

rip. he lived a high stress life. us guys in middle age and older owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to try and look after our health, mentally and physically.

RIP Coop. He really was one of the most prominent coaches in White Sox history. He somehow got a Cy Young worthy year out of Esteban Loaiza and helped orchestrate one of the greatest pitching staffs of all time in 2005. I still remember him hanging up on the Score in 2011. What a guy. I think he was still doing radio appearances in the past few years too, this really came out of nowhere.
