I don’t think anybody is ignoring Roch’s 2025 season. But wouldn’t you want a guy whose arrow is pointing up rather than pointing sideways or slightly down? And if you take Lackey, you can’t play him only 120 games. You would need to play him at a different position for another 30 games or so. Look, both guys are great. I’m just pushing you on it because I like to hear from both sides. I’m reading many pro-Lackey posts lately, and I want to read more pro-Cholowsky posts.

Good point about makeup. Do you know anything about Lackey’s makeup? Also, it’s really not the small sample size from regional games that people are looking at, is it? The full season stats for Lackey are insane, and he’s doing it in a better conference than Cholowsky. Slugging around .800 with a BB% near 18% has to be pretty rare. I’m trying to think of players in the last 15 years or so who have done that. Ivan Menendez and Brent Rooker come to mind, but they were 1B/LF type players who struck out close to 20% of the time. Kris Bryant obviously did it. He had one of the best college seasons ever. Andrew Vaughn is probably the best comparison when looking at slugging that high, walking that much, and not striking out much.

I’m also curious to hear what James thinks at this point. The only thing I’d give the nod to Roch to at this point is that he plays SS. But Lackey is having a better season, improved upon last year, plays in a better conference, and has an arrow that is pointing straight up.

How’s his plate discipline?

I remember that. I’m pretty sure we won one of the games (or maybe even two) by getting out of a bases loaded jam in the 9th. Possibly a game ending double play. Keith Foulke is popping into my head.

I know this post is from a couple weeks ago, but perhaps you were confused by the “WE” part? If you read it as the pronoun “we”, the last paragraph is very confusing. But if you read it as “WestEddy”, it all makes sense.

I apologize if I’m being an idiot, but what does this mean? Did he hit 99? Or was 97.7 his top speed? Also, I wasn’t able to watch a single pitch tonight, but I’m catching up on everything now. Wow, what great game.

I’m a math guy, so I’m always thinking in terms of probabilities. Once it was 0-2, I turned to my son and said “I’d still let him bunt here. Probably around a 50-60% chance he’ll get the bunt down, and it’s much less likely he will move the runner over if you let him swing” If it was a different pitcher, sure, let him swing. But I didn’t like the chances of him moving Acuna over once it was 0-2 against that lefty.

Tough lefty on the mound. I liked attempting the bunt still. Just gotta execute it.

Pretty cool that he got his OPS up to around .800 now. And he can’t even legally have a beer for another 7 or 8 months.

James, what are your thoughts on Lackey?

Ha! I’ll pass on the bet. I don’t want to feel responsible if he starts tanking, even if it’s a dumb avatar bet. I’m also the last guy that knows anything about fWAR and pitchers. But I have always been a huge Davis Martin fan, even before this year. He can throw any pitch in any count for a strike. In that regard, he has always reminded me of a right handed Mark Buehrle.

I have no reason to believe he won’t. He looks really good.

If I’m writing that, I’d say zero runs since we are qualifying it with “after the second batter”.

Absolutely crazy that we won that game. And I love every second of it.
