Goodbye fighting, hello shootout! I like it! As far as increased stickwork goes, implement an escalating fine scale AND suspend the offender without allowing the team to replace him on the roster. Hit the hatchet men in the pocketbook and short-hand the team and this s*** will stop, pronto! If people can't play hockey without goonism, then the sport should die off. It's bulls*** to see some cementhead gooning it up late in a meaningless game, and I realize I'm probably in the minority here, but the fighting is boring to me. If the refs were given the leverage to call the game as it's written in the rulebooks, there'd be no need for goon revenge. The endless power plays would be punishment enough. Some of the best hockey you'll ever see is played on wider rinks with no fighting, and THAT is what the NHL should strive for. The teams should have taken advantage of all this "time off" to rebuild their ice surfaces to match Olympic proportions - increase the emphasis on skating and passing and decrease the clutching, grabbing and neanderthal tactics and you'd have a MUCH better product.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/en/headlines/...?id=26748&cat=8 One thing he missed is the fact that sales of NHL merchandise is down 85% from last year. And why not?? Who the hell is gonna fork over 100+ bucks for a jersey of a team whose owners can't be bothered to start a season or negotiate with players THEY locked out?? It's even hit home for me - my wife and I have a standing Valentine's Day gift deal every year - she gets a spa visit, I get a hockey jersey. This year I passed on the jersey and will instead apply that cash to the TV I got around Christmas. I just don't feel like buying a shirt of a team that's not playing, unless that team is the Hartford Whalers. And as I've said before, if the NHL tries to use replacement players next season, I'll watch on TV but NO WAY will I drop one dollar for a game ticket.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) Where did you read that? When I called the CWS ticket office they told me that Pepsi was still if the fold for sponsoring 1/2 price tuesdays. I had heard a report a while back on the radio that speculated that the Pepsi thing was being negotiated but wasn't for sure for 2005. Hadn't seen anything on whitesox.com about 1/2 price Tuesdays, so I made an assumption. Maybe it's still being negotiated? I hope it's in effect for 2005 - 1/2 price nights are about the only time I'll be able to afford tickets this year. The prices are insane.

Maybe they could have a reality show with her on Showtime, where she suspects that Kris has been cheating and she f***s the entire Mets locker room.... I heard that Doug Christie's psycho wife is possibly going to have a reality show too....WOW, TV has lots of original ideas left in the tank..... :puke

Mondays are half price on Internet sales too. The 24 hour thing was for the Pepsi 1/2 price Tuesdays, which are apparently no more.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 01:06 AM) Someone f***ed with this poll. LOL! Seriously though, I dont feel the need to ignore anyone on here. It's a freeking website for chrissakes. If you get that stirred up by what someone writes here that you cant bear to even stumble across one of their posts then I'd hate to see how you deal with real life. I deal with real life the same way. If there's a group of friends and one of them is a raging f***head, I ignore the f***head. Nice thing here is that I don't even have to see or hear what the f***head says. I'd be just fine without the ignore feature ( in fact, I WAS just fine without a couple weeks ago ), but I find that it enhances my time here. Addition by subtraction and all that. Sometimes the Interweb is better than real life...

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 04:42 PM) Thst's not entirely true. I heard on the radio this morning Josh Beckett kept the last out ball from the 2003 WS, and still keeps it in his glove under his bed. Maybe the Bosox ball is more valuable from a historic, curse-breaking standpoint, though. Are you minimizing the value of the baseball that broke the SIX-YEAR title drought of the long-suffering Florida Marlins fans?????? -
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 07:37 PM) coughanthraxcough? Nope. I actually get a kick out of AnthraxFan's posts... Besides, I gotta give a small amount of respect to an Anthrax fan...Anthrax has made a LOT of music I love. I'll never say who I've ignored, becuse that would defeat the purpose of the ignore feature.

I only have one person on ignore, and only because they've never posted anything that I wasn't sorry I read. I have no plans to ignore anyone else, but I'm happier to not see the posts I no longer see.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 07:18 PM) Speaking from a lifetime of experience....Well, considering that up until April my hair was down to my ass, and numerous times it was eggplant purple, and has been so for the past 20 years....My hair is now REALLY short, due to God thinking I would look better with A LOT of flesh exposed on top of my head. ...or maybe God just doesn't like eggplants....

I'm itching for Spring Training! I don't really care much about football or basketball, and hockey doesn't exist except for the Wolves, so the next month is gonna suck.

I'm not glad Magglio's gone, but the Sox couldn't make the moves they made if they committed that much money to him. I really hope he can continue at the same level of play, even if it IS for the Northsiders.
-
I liked "The Count Of 3 And 2", but I didn't enjoy watching him walk in winning runs against the Sox. Best of luck to him in Toronto, except when facing the Sox.

It Depends How You Define "Quiet"...

You know who really HAS been quiet? That dips*** sportswriter in Kansas City, Joe Whateverhisnamewas. He got pretty cocky during KC's fluke season... -
QUOTE(Capn12 @ Jan 10, 2005 -> 01:11 AM) ...and as much as I dislike the guy, I really like his cover of "Personal Jesus" by Marilyn Manson I didn't think his version was different enough from Depeche Mode's, except for the "Beautiful People" drumming in there. I like when a band takes a cover song and makes it their own. That's what keeps it interesting for me. Like Local H did with their cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic"....

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 9, 2005 -> 08:17 PM) Trust me man, just try to be involved as much as you can and have fun. High school and college are 2 of the best times of your life. When you get into the real world, like I did recently, you will realize how much you miss school. I guess I'm the exception that proves the rule, but HS and the bit of college I attended sucked ass. I went to a HS outside of my own neighborhood, and everybody there were a bunch of f***ing racists. I'm Caucasian, but almost ALL of my friends were ( and still are ) Hispanic, so to be around a bunch of neanderthal narrow-minded halfwits was NO fun at all. I never found any meaningful friendships there and decided to get my diploma in the Principal's office rather than walk the stage with all those f***tards. And college was a drag - just more awful teachers and no motivation to do anything. Cash the check, then f*** you. The "real world" for me is SO much better - I just come in to work, put in 7.5 good hours, and get back home to my family. Right now is WAY better for me than my so-called "coolest years". ( A big f*** you to VH1 too, while I'm at it....)

Every freakin' movie makes money these days, cuz the movie theater is the new church. Some people NEED to go every single weekend and see whatever trash Hollywood spills on them.

Dougy M works to burn his bridges in Boston
The Critic replied to southsideirish71's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I heard Steve Phillips mention that while the ball is in play, it belongs to the Red Sox, or in this case the Cardinals, because the team "owns" the game on the field. Once the ball leaves the field of play, it goes up for grabs. Makes sense to me, since the umpires have to allow a ball to be presented to a player for a first hit, momentous hit, etc. I believe Doug has an obligation to give the ball back to the team. -
QUOTE(Beastly @ Jan 9, 2005 -> 10:58 AM) Green Day-American Idiot is the worst song I've heard recently. Just wanted to say HI from my alternate universe. The title song from American idiot is the only song I've heard off it that I like.
